Er. Kiran K Murali is the Head of the Mechanical Engineering Department at Toms College of Engineering, Kerala. He completed his bachelor's degree in 2009 and then opted for a Master’s degree in Thermal Engineering. After completing his master's in Mechanical Engineering, he joined as Assistant Professor in Toms College of Engineering and then got promoted as the Head of Department of Mechanical Engineering with a total teaching experience of 9 years till now. He has published several research papers at the National level.

What are your responsibilities as Head of this Mechanical Department?

I am delighted to introduce you to the Department of Mechanical Engineering, which is the foundation for engineers. We are always committed to imparting knowledge through closely-knit families of highly qualified individuals. The Department was founded in 1989 to provide quality education to aspiring engineers in visveswaraya group. The main focus of our program is to produce graduates who are technically competent. Currently, our department offers a B.Tech course (4 years) and a Diploma course (3 years) in Mechanical Engineering, with an intake of 120 students. Besides having highly skilled faculty and staff, the department also boasts a centre of excellence and state-of-the-art laboratories.

What are your general ideas for attracting more minority students to study?

Our Mechanical Department defines diversity as recognizing every student that comes to the classroom. Also, empowering them with experiences, strengths, and ideas. The goal of diversity is to explore and capitalize on these differences to enrich learning in our classroom. Further, providing students with challenges to consider other points of view might help them develop social skills and equip them with life skills, as well.

There are innovative, academic small groups consisting of professional instructors who work closely with first-year students. They help them learn how to approach university-level engineering problems. We offer virtual one-on-one tutoring appointments, online success workshops, and virtual academic coaching sessions to help students with a variety of academic needs. We also coach them on time management, organization, and study strategies based on individual learning styles.


How does your Mechanical Department prepare students for placements?

“Soft skills and personality development courses to prep students for placements”

The Placement and Training Cell is an essential component of our college. Throughout the year, training events are provided to prepare prospective students for the campus selection program. From the first to the sixth semester, a personality development course is integrated into the curriculum of Toms College. Furthermore, the department offers technical training, group discussions, and mock interviews to help students prepare for placement. Apart from the main projects, mini-projects, and industrial training provided in the third year of the curriculum.

How well established is the Mechanical Workshops at this College?

Our Laboratories have been very well established to cover the entire syllabus and motivate students to learn beyond. It develops complete knowledge of the subject (both practical and theoretical) and creates promising engineers in the future. The department is fully equipped with all the labs required for the curriculum and research including Fluid and Hydraulic Machinery Laboratory, Mechanical Engineering workshop, Heat Engine Laboratory, Heat and Mass Transfer Laboratory, Manufacturing Technology Laboratory I and II.
