Dr. G. Y. Shitole is presently working as the Principal at BALAJI COLLEGE OF ARTS, COMMERCE, AND SCIENCE, Pune. With 42 years of experience in teaching and administration, he has served at many organizations and has 52 research papers to his credit published in various national and international journals. He has written 7 books on various topics and also he has contributed in many ways on the academic front. Moreover, he has been a recipient of the Best Teacher Award of Maharashtra State Government in 2012 and has completed three Minor and one Major Research Projects sanctioned by UGC New Delhi.

What will you say are the best practices in the course you’re offering?

“Peer tutoring and mentorship learning programs”

In our college, we have a ‘study-buddy’ system. In this system, we classify students as advanced and slow learners. Advanced learners teach slow learners and help them to grow. Also, we have a Mentor-Mentee program wherein the teachers are mentors and every student is guided by them on a day-to-day basis in order to keep them up to date in terms of knowledge and career guidance along with advanced knowledge in Tally, ERP, etc. As a result, our BBA students are appearing for Management exams like CAT, MAT and MH-CET exams and they are getting into top Management colleges across the country. 

How does the program ensure that students are being prepared for the future?

“Offering practical activities and career guidance”

In this program, the students are well acquainted with the latest knowledge in terms of industry, academic requirements, practice, etc. Students are taught in such a way that their career growth, personality development and professional attributes are always the priority. Also, we try to make them worthy citizens of our country by offering various co-curricular and extra-curricular activities on environmental conservation and awareness. While we are imparting knowledge to the students, we are also providing them additional courses whereby their personality is developed professionally. We give competitive examination guidance, CAT & MAT exam guidance, Tally classes and so on.

How did you train your faculty to deliver this program to the students?

“Development through orientation programs and research enhancement”

In this regard, we conduct faculty development programs from time to time at college level, and also send our faculty to attend such programs organized by various universities and reputed institutes. We offer them opportunities to gain advanced knowledge and technology oriented knowledge so that there is exchange of information, communication and technology in day to day teaching. We also encourage teachers to undertake research projects, also students and teachers work on projects together. This type of research culture helps faculty to improve their teaching.

“Excellent academics and well-performing students”

The college has an outstanding past academic record where students from Balaji topped Pune University in BBA program in April 2018 examination. The gold medalist was from Balaji College of Arts, Commerce and Science itself. This year 26 of our students from BBA have secured admission to MBA program in Sri Balaji University, Pune which is a remarkable achievement for us. At Balaji College, very soon we are likely to go for expansion in M.Com. and some other professional programs affiliated to Savitribai Phule Pune University. 

How do you tend to build an industry connected with this program?

“Alliance and integration with industries”

At present, we take our students on industrial visits to show them how manufacturing processes work. As per the suggestion from Management, we are signing a Memorandum of Understanding with reputed industrial organizations as well. We have identified these organizations and in this line, we are extending our existing activities. Also, we are collaborating with reputed industries and recruiters, where students will be given an opportunity to do internships and learn through such programs.

What type of projects are students working on in your college?

“Various societal awareness programs”

Students are given projects based on rules and regulations made by Savitribai Phule University. Along with this, our faculty is giving projects related to social issues, environmental problems, etc. as well. These projects are then evaluated by faculty and students are given grades according to their performance. These projects help students to learn, think and grow by themselves. Also, we have an NSS unit that is very active in providing social values, taking students to society, NSS camps, environmental awareness programs under which our students participate actively.

What are the career options after pursuing this course?

“Diverse job perspective and higher education perspectives”

Our students are getting placed in industrial organizations and service sectors including Government services. One of our BBA students is working in Maharashtra’s Chief Minister’s office. Also, we groom students in such a way that they get good opportunities in Masters’s programs in reputed universities in India and abroad.
