Dr. Shaik Rusthum has been working as the Principal of Brilliant Institute of Engineering and Technology, Hyderabad, Telangana for the last 13 years. He obtained his Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering specialization in 1988 from Osmania University, Master's Degree in Hydraulics in 1994 from Andhra University and Ph.D for his research on Watershed Management in 2003 from Osmania University. He has an amazing 33 years of experience in the Teaching, Research and Development, Project Management and Consultancy sectors. Also he has been teaching subjects like Hydraulics, Watershed Management, Urban Development and Transportation Engineering, GIS & Remote Sensing and Satellite Data for more than 30 years now. With his exposure to some of the best institutions dealing with research and development systems, he has developed the required capabilities, motivation, vision and national and international connectivity and is fully aware of the technology related issues and their implementations in countries abroad like Saudi Arabia. He has actively participated in many of the Research and Academic Development Programs and he is the Convener of Academic Cell, Advisor to the Institution of Engineers (India) Students Chapter, Member of Development cum Building Committee and Technical Committee of Maulana Azad National Urdu University of Hyderabad. In addition to this, he is a Technical Society Member of FIE, MISTE, MISRS and is a Fellow Member in Institute of Engineers, Life Member of Indian Society for Technical Education and Indian Society for Remote Sensing. He is recognized by Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University, Hyderabad and Osmania University to guide PhD Candidates and in his mentorship, 35 UG and PG students and 3 PhD fellows was Ph.D awarded from JNTUH.

We continuously and dedicatedly work for the all-around growth and development of our students. And we offer regular training programs to students to help them build new skills and competencies. In addition to this, we conduct industrial tours, mock interviews to ensure students are completely prepared before the actual placement drives, group discussions to enhance the presentation and communication skills of students, aptitude assessments, expert lectures and skill development programs based on MNCs standards on a regular basis.

What are some of the best practices of courses your institute is offering to students? 

"We start inculcating Entrepreneurship skills in our students from start and regularly conduct test for them"

In my opinion, some of the amazing practices or features of courses our institute is offering to students are the Entrepreneurship Awareness Cells which we have established to prepare students so that they can start their own business after successful completion of their respective courses. Next we have industrial and institutional interaction programmes which we frequently organize because we firmly believe that technical courses are incomplete without industrial exposure. Lastly, logical reasoning assessments are organized by the Training and Placement Cell of our college using online modes.

How do you train your faculty and students in accordance with industry standards?

"We upskill them by encouraging them to take part in seminars, workshops and conferences"

We regularly motivate our teaching staff and students to attend conferences, seminars, workshops and skill development programmes on a frequent basis so that they can upgrade their existing skills and build new ones. Apart from this, we assign case studies and research based projects to students, use e-learning tools to teach students, conduct hands-on training sessions and instructor led training programs along with management based events and activities to make students competent and confident. 


How do you build a strong connection between your institute courses and industry demands?

"By conducting industry interaction sessions, and regularly updating our teaching pedagogies"

For the purpose of ensuring a strong connection between our institute's courses and corporate requirements, we organize industry connect sessions and rigorous and customized training programs for students on a regular interval. Also, before the start of these sessions we make our end objectives crystal clear to students so that they can set clear expectations from us and objectives are in place, it becomes easy for us to design-redesign-implement and re-evaluate the learning sessions. 


What challenges have you faced in implementing new programs in your curriculum?

"Involving correct people in its review and implementation phase was the biggest challenge for us"

As an academic institution we have faced different kinds of challenges at different levels while implementing new programs in our curriculum and some of the worth mentioning challenges were related to engaging and developing leaders in the curriculum review process and also during the implementation of courses. Apart from this, we also struggled while arranging training for our students and teachers and instilling 21st century skills in students and also in modifying our teaching pedagogies and practices to suit individual students requirements. 


On what kinds of projects your students are currently working on under their respective courses?

"Our students are working on many research based and designing projects"

Our students are working on a wide variety of projects including projects on reading and writing, data organizing projects, investigation based projects, designing and decision making projects, augmentation based projects, and for all kinds of projects they are using the latest tools and technologies as per industry standards.
