Dr. Deepika Dhand is the Pro VC of MATS University, Raipur. In the following interview she talks about understanding of the socio-political economic scenario in the world. She goes on to describe the admission process and number of students’ intake for the past few years. Although the count has decreased in the engineering domain due to the pandemic, the numbers have improved in other courses. She talks about the courses which the university has curated to serve the purpose of the current trends. Moreover, she describes the placement scenario in the university, and the aim of Central Placement Cell to ensure that students get placed in top organizations. The result is because of the rigorous hard work behind the scene and the in-house training provided by MATS to the students, which gives them a cutting edge over their counterparts. She emphasizes that humility and emotional intelligence in leadership brings drastic success. At the end she describes the cut-throat competition which has emerged over time. She says that Competition is sometimes healthy as it motivates a student to learn more but excellence towards academics is generally threatened with competition.

An understanding of the socio-political economic scenario in the world has urged to impart advanced Communication skill programmes

An understanding of the socio-political economic scenario in the world has urged me to impart advanced Communication skill programmes (both in Hindi and English). This would help the students to adapt themselves to any change and conditions of their workplace. The enhancement of communication skills would take place by listening, speaking, reading and writing (LSRW) exercises given to the students by their teachers. Online teaching and learning i.e., virtual assemblies, online lectures, online assignments compulsory online yearly seminars and Webinars (national and international) should be conducted. To improve Reading skills MATS has access to all daily newspapers weekly journals and magazines (national and international) which are provided to each and every student of MATS on their mail. These readings would help the students to fare well in Group discussions and Interviews thus making the student employable. Compulsory Trainings for academic excellence and industry will equip the student to procure value able internships and placement in esteemed organizations.

We have curated courses which are very successful and are suiting the need of the time

MATS University (Chhattisgarh) was established in 2006; approved by UGC and AICTE (All India Council of Technical Education) offers B.A, B Tech (Hons) BBA, BCA, BSC, B Tech LLB, BA LLB, BBA LLB and B COM courses at the UG level. M Tech, MSC, MCA and MBA courses are also pursued (duration two years). The University conducts entrance exams for admissions for these courses. The following data highlights the number of admissions that took place in the past:

  1. 2015-16 = 1692
  2. 2016-17 = 1481
  3. 2017-18 = 1545
  4. 2018-2019 = 1645
  5. 2019-20 = 1580

It has been observed that due to the spread of COVID-19, new admissions have come to a halt i.e. with the commencement of the Lock down. Regular college will resume by August-September 2020 according to government sources. The 12th standard examinations have not yet taken place therefore students are unable to decide which stream and which university to choose and pursue their education. Decreasing decline in choosing to study Engineering has been observed. There is a trend amongst the students to opt for Law and its allied subjects (BBA, BCOM, and MCOM). The Distance Education Department opened shortly having a current strength of 7628 students. These courses are very successful and are suiting the need of the time. With online education – online exams, online webinars, interviews, a strong and improved infrastructure and a very well qualified staff support the new linguistic digital divide in MATS University will surely double the admissions in all the departments.

I strongly emphasize that humility and emotional intelligence in leadership brings drastic success

True leadership emanates automatically from true love and passion for their subjects. Having been brought up in Delhi, exposed to an environment of a metropolitan city and the education systems of that time (1980’s). I have tried to share the best educational patterns, subjects and technologies which I have been exposed to. I wanted to stress upon the necessity of transformation on teaching and learning methods and observed that change has to take place of which technology was one of the most significant drivers of both social changes. Maintenance of positive human relationships matter most in building a good leader. Good leadership fosters learning tailored to the needs and wants of both teachers and students promoting learning systems that may be virtual or online.

I strongly emphasize that humility and emotional intelligence in leadership would bring about drastic success in arranging stress in emotional relationships and good social awareness to resolve conflicts without creating any communication gaps or resolving to any kind of conflict. If one is transparent, trust will follow and the purpose of one’s mission will be fulfilled.

It is imperative for the students to stay motivated and concentrate to become mentally strong

The biggest challenge in higher education and students of MATS University in general is to build good communication skills. It is mandatory to bridge the gap between their teachers and their students, Students and their parents, the students, the management and the administration of MATS University.

This will motivate the students to concentrate and be mentally prepared to take all kinds of examinations (inside the University and outside). As the basics are known and he/she has mastered every small point of that subject the student should broaden his/her background by reading newspapers, magazines and books and becoming interested in the world using effective reasoning hypothesis taking decisions. All these habits will make the student abet smart readers, writers, speakers and listeners. This would be helping the peer group to take competitive exams with ease and confidence conducting themselves gratefully in interviews, group discussions earning covetous gobs.

Students have to choose their subjects carefully keeping adaptability, employability, and sustainability as a paramount aspect

The age of the fourth industrial revolution has begun and new schemes of skill requirements or a combination of two together for example: biochemistry, bio science, biometrics, industrial math’s, techno-industry- etc has initiated. The industrial management students, therefore, have to choose their subjects very carefully, keeping in mind the adaptability, employability and sustainability for the next thirty years by policy makers, business leaders and academicians’ educationalists, training providers and associations.

Excellence towards academics is generally threatened with competition

Excellence towards academics is generally threatened with competition. In the 21st century, competition is sometimes healthy as it motivates a student to learn more. Students are excited to win the game of question and answers, on topics of human knowledge. Healthy competition makes the students inquisitive about research. However, too much competition can also hamper success as students sometimes get into stress. Too much comparison among students is not good. If one student is good in subject ‘A’ another will be good in subject ‘B’ so what is the competition about. In fact, they should help out in improving the others’ weak aspects.

A feature of competitiveness in schools today overcomes these challenges and handles a lot of responsibilities. The MATS University strives for a competitive environment which pushes us in the right direction to focus on our goals.
