Dr Suresh Kumar is the Director at Tula's Institute. He is a visionary who believes in providing an experiential learning environment for the faculty and students as well. His firm belief is to continuously learn and quickly adapt to evolving changes and the same can be seen in his strategies towards the institute. Read his interview here. 

What are the key factors that keep you connected with the education sector?

“To serve the young minds and groom them is what keeps me contended”

I have been into the education sector for the last 20 years, and I enjoy being a part of this sector. Providing the right education to the students is the best service to humanity. With this motto, I am serving my country, and there is no limit to it. I hope that I will be able to upgrade the education level in educational institutes in the years to come. 

What is your philosophy of leadership? How would you describe your leadership style? 

“My philosophy of leadership is that I always play on the strengths of my team”

I believe that every individual has some vital areas in which he can perform the best. I believe in teamwork and always do my best to develop my teammates. I always take the onus of failures and give credit for success to my team. My leadership style is a mix of democratic and coaching styles. I believe in two way communication.

How does the curriculum of your Institute ensure the best practice of industry?

“We always believed in providing experiential learning to our students”

We have introduced project-based learning in the curriculum of all UG courses like B.Tech, BBA, BSc. (Agriculture), BCA. Students are being offered a training program in niche areas like data analytics, machine learning, artificial intelligence, digital marketing, business analytics, robotics, and smart manufacturing with industry help. Webinars by industry personnel is a regular feature of all courses.

What do you think your roles and responsibilities to the Institute and the students are?

“It is essential to provide an ambient nurturing environment to the students”

My responsibility to the Institute is to provide fair and effective governance and provide an environment for fostering two-way communications. Framing policies and procedures for the growth of people is another responsibility. My primary responsibility to my students is to provide them the right to make them good human beings who are sensitive to society and nature. Implementing and practicing outcome-based education to my students is another priority we have been doing at Tula’s. 

“Top priorities should be to become a category A institute as per the new education policy over the next ten years. We aim to excel as an institute providing skill-based education for employment generation in our country.”

What are some of the biggest challenges for higher education in general and for your Institute specifically?

“The biggest challenge before higher education is to attract talent in the teaching profession”

Skill-based education is needed for an hour. In India, with a huge population of the youth, institutes will have to float courses that ensure employment. Aligning courses with industry needs is another challenge before Institutes. The industry is changing at a fast pace, and institutes will have to find industry mentors for their course to bridge the gap between academia and industry. For my institute, I think the same challenges are there.
