What are the challenges of distance learning amid the pandemic?

“Technical problems, distractions, time management and academic expectations”

The Coronavirus pandemic has forced many colleges and students to move to virtual learning, an adjustment for many who are accustomed to in-person classes. This crisis has transformed many aspects of life, especially higher education. Firstly, Technical issues are bound to happen in an online learning environment. Students residing in interior areas suffer the most due to network issues, unavailability of laptops, costly data recharge, etc. Also, while studying from home students may find it difficult to concentrate and get distracted by family members, games, movies and other activities. The consequence of this distraction can be a lack of understanding, late submission of assignments and disappointing results. Staying motivated accepting your home as a space of work is quite difficult for the students. Uncertainty about the future as this sudden change has brought havoc in everyone’s life has caused anxiety and students have started worrying about their academic future concerning the fulfillment of job requirements, improvement of employability skills, interpersonal skills, subject knowledge acquisition, etc. Assessment & Evaluation of students has become difficult as well.

How do you ensure the quality of education in online mediums?

“Training and communicating with faculty on technological transformations”

It is crucial to find a balance between the adoption of technical enhancement and providing personal support. We provide proper training to the teachers before the commencement of classes so that they don’t find themselves struggling with technical issues during their classes. There are various Faculty Development Programs (FDPs) to help teachers get acquainted with online teaching, Need-specific teaching tools, designing of online activities, mock classes, etc. The institute has deployed all required measures to tackle operational challenges as well. Online platforms like zoom, Microsoft teams, etc. were deployed for communication among staff and management. Microsoft Team as an e-learning platform for conducting classes to continue proper learning and maintain the pace.

What will be the impact of COVID on the industry 5 years down the line?

“Large scale inclination in job perspectives”

It has become quite obvious that demand in IT has grown exponentially, and the world has become even more active to switch from offline to online mode. This implies that jobs in the IT and software industry would increase and in turn, manual jobs would decrease. Any suggestions you would like to give to the current youth?

“Explore more dynamically and have a purposeful life”

Graduation is an important time in a youth’s life. This is the time for them to figure out what they are passionate about and what they want to spend their life doing. So, I would suggest they explore their field of choice in great depth and work on not only their knowledge base but their personality, their overall skills set, their ethics and morals as well. Youths must try to be the best version of themselves.
