Millia Institute of Technology, Head of Department - Mechanical Engineering: MD Obaidur Rahman Interview

MD Obaidur Rahman is Assistant Professor and HOD of Mechanical Engineering in Millia Institute of Technology. He has done MTech in Manufacturing Engineering. He has published various journals such as Material Science and Engineering, Measurement of power output and optimization of wind turbines. He has participated in a national conference on recent trends in renewable energy technology and smart grid 2017 at Modi University Rajasthan. He has been teaching Manufacturing Process, CAD / CAM, Operation Research, Material Science at the Millia Institute of Technology.

What are your roles and responsibilities towards the students as a HOD? 

“Plan, deliver and evaluate theoretical/ practical operations” 

Department heads monitor, lead and manage overall operations performed through the students. They also conduct research and set goals for the students. Department heads ensure that overall day-to-day operations run smoothly and measure the performance of students. HOD collects the student feedback about the faculty member’s subject wise and communicates the feedback to the concerned faculty members in the standard format as decided by the principal. 

How do you try to bring in a practical approach towards subjects and make it industry oriented?

“Experiments are part of practical activity”

The most essential aspect of a practical and industry-oriented approach in engineering courses is that it establishes a basis for students' post-college lives. Internships are crucial in developing this mindset. Teaching and engineering are both skill-based occupations. Practical knowledge is more significant than academic understanding in certain disciplines. Experiments are part of practical activity.

How does your department prepare students for higher education?

“Enrol students in the training program”

Our institute contributes toward the progress of the nation by developing high quality digital manufacturing Lab and, by providing knowledge of cutting edge technology to students. Department also encourages students to enroll in the training program conducted under MSME tool room, run by the government of India.

What was your vision when you came to the Millia Institute of Technology? 

“To provide quality education to students”

My vision was to provide quality education to the students while learning and contributing to the organization’s progress. I am also trying my best to apply my skills and knowledge in teaching while being punctual and dedicated.

What approach do you follow to teach students?

“Focus on practical aspects of theory” 

I try to make them understand the basics by giving them real-life examples. I also try to explain the theory with practicality and explain to students the usage of the same in the industries.
