Prof. Padmapani is working as an Assistant Professor in the Computer Science and Engineering Department at Deogiri Institute of Engineering and Management Studies. She has completed her Ph.D., M.E.(C.S.E.), and B.E.(I.T.), and has a teaching experience of 15.5 Years. She has done research in Sentiment Analysis, Intrusion Detection Systems, Machine Learning, Face Expression Recognition, and Deep Learning. You have held key positions at education institutes throughout your professional career. What keeps you connected with the Education Sector and how has your experience been so far with the institute?
I have been working in the education system for 15 years. I believe that Education is a noble profession, and being a part of the education system is a wonderful way to serve our society. Being a passionate learner, I think serving in education gives a great experience for ‘Engineering Engineers’ . It gives me a sense of happiness and pride to be part of the education system.
Being the Assistant Professor – Computer Science and Engineering at Deogiri Institute of Engineering and Management Studies (DIEMS), what are your roles and responsibilities towards the students?
As assistant professor, my responsibilities towards students are effective classroom teaching-learning, counseling of students, guiding them for projects, co-curricular activities, and extra activities, and also most importantly mentoring them. For effective classroom teaching-learning, outcome based teaching learning methods like activity based learning, project based learning, flipped classroom etc.
Do you have any extracurricular activities/ programs to enhance the skills of the students or expose them to real-world challenges?
Yes, we do have co-curricular and extracurricular activities. On 2nd August 2016, we have started 2b||!2b coding club for students. I have been coordinating this club since its inception. Under this club, we conduct technical sessions, technical competitions, workshops on emerging technologies by ‘students for students’ . This helps students to learn management skills and emerging technologies. They learn to organize different sessions, competitions, and workshops. It enhanced their technical knowledge. It helps them in getting placements, higher education and for their startup’s businesses.
How does the curriculum of Deogiri Institute of Engineering and Management Studies (DIEMS) ensure that the students are being prepared for the future?
The curriculum ensures that students are well prepared for the industry. The curriculum is industry oriented. In the second year and third year of B.Tech, students need to do internships for a month. In the final year of B.tech, students need to do a six month internship. The curriculum also helps students to get better placements, as the curriculum includes core subjects, courses on emerging technologies and courses on communication skills.

How do you try to bring in a practical approach towards subjects and make it industry oriented?
To make the subject industry oriented, I ask students to do projects for continuous assessment of my subject. I make sure that projects are assigned to students in such a way that they learn the subject practically using the latest technologies and they also learn teamwork. I believe that students learn subjects in a better way by doing projects. They learn to apply subject knowledge practically.
What are the interventions and approaches you bring in apart from the curriculum to train/teach the students?
Collaborative learning, mentoring mechanisms, peer learning, personal counseling, and career counseling like approaches are used apart from the curriculum to train the students.
What would you like people to know about your institute they may not know?
Effective self-discipline and good habits are nurtured among the students which make students good human beings.

What are some of the biggest challenges you see, both for higher education in general and for Deogiri Institute of Engineering and Management Studies (DIEMS) specifically?
I think some challenges for higher education are financing and our heterogeneity in education.

I suggest current youth and aspiring students, be curious about everything. It is a key source of learning.
