With a rich experience in academic and research, Dr Shankararao Yadam is presently working as Asst Professor, Physics at CVR College of Engineering, Hyderabad. Along with attending and conducting national level workshops and conferences, he has also worked as a coordinator for a number of government organized projects and research works. Besides, publications in several national journals, Dr Shankararao has been awarded with ‘Best Thesis Award in DAE-Solid State Physics Symposium’ in 2015.

What are your roles and responsibilities towards the students? 

“Taking responsibility for their good future”

The first foremost thing is we have to fill the gap between what understanding a student has, coming from intermediate level and what actually the engineering student needs. We need to expose them to practicality of the theoretical concepts. As there are numerous sources in the surroundings to get affected and deviated, we keep a track of students and interact with them on the campus and off-campus as well. As a teacher, I make sure my students are leading an ethically and morally right way to a successful life. 


How do you ensure that what you teach is Industry-relevant?

“Making students understand better and think logically”

I always believed in experimentation coupled with the theory classes in teaching. I try to explain concepts and logical reasoning to students from my own experience after having worked in diverse backgrounds. I give them a bigger picture as to how what we are doing is relevant to industry and in what applications each of these concepts is used. I always tell them what should be an experimentalist’s approach to an industry and how these are interlinked, and try to invoke that kind of passion in them.

How do you strategize your curriculum so that students gain necessary skills? 

“Technological advancements in structure and course curriculum”

We constantly upgrade the syllabus, according to the new developments and relevance with industrial practices. We also have introduced new programs recently like Artificial intelligence, Machine learning, data sciences and Cyber-security to aid our students with the latest developments in the field. We offer high-tech laboratories and modern technical facilities as well to aid our students with best possible practical knowledge in various disciplines of engineering and applied physics. For Civil and Mechanical engineering, we have designed a special course called Engineering Physics which helps them for better understanding of different subjects. 


What changes are being brought in your system in this pandemic situation? 

“Putting everything through online means and regular interactions”

COVID-19 did bring drastic changes in the education system, especially the courses and studies demanding practical laboratory classes and hands-on experimentation. We rapidly updated all our contents of the curriculum online in various interactive formats like presentations, video demonstrations, practical interactive sessions and Q&A with experts, etc. Initially it was really challenging to make students participate and communicate but things are gradually improving now and our students present themselves well in online classes and presentations. We have conducted timely classes and even motivation sessions personally to keep students boosted and elevate their perspective of learning and absorption.


What are the things that we need to do going forward for a better education system in India? 

“Relevant practical exposure and implementation of concepts”

Theory and experiment should go hand-in-hand in the modern education system of India. Once theoretical teaching is done, the experimentation with the respective instrument should happen immediately so that students retain the knowledge well enough. They must study and read the same thing along with practical implementation altogether to understand things better. We must create a generation of leaders and professionals who stand unsurpassed in the global network of businesses.

What would be your advice to the young generation?

“Keep a practical approach towards learning and put in efforts”

To understand things better, adopt and approach a practical way, try and experience things that would help you know what actually the concept is. Teach and advice is one side of the story, the student should have interest and put in that zeal and enthusiasm from their end to eventually come out with flying colours.
