Dr. Asha T. is the Professor & HOD in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at Bangalore Institute of Technology. She has a total of 25 years of teaching experience in various educational institutions and universities. She received her Ph.D. in Computer and Information Science for the thesis entitled, “Novel Soft Computing Approaches for the Identification of Tuberculosis”. She has several publications in peer-reviewed journals of repute. She has also delivered talks and chaired sessions in various international conferences.

What are your responsibilities towards the students of this college?

“Empower them with technical skills to promote innovation”

I coordinate with my fellow colleagues and staff, to promote high-quality technical education for students. The aim is to enable them with strong skills to develop software for societal needs. It is also my duty to keep track of the industry trends and modify policies accordingly.


How do you tend to establish healthy relations with the students and fellow faculty?

“A strong mentoring system is put in place for students benefit” 

As a HOD, I provide a good academic environment to accommodate both students and staff. We have a proctorial system, where each proctor or faculty is assigned to 20 students. They are responsible for providing productive solutions to various academic problems faced by students. This allows a healthy discussion between the two parties and establishes positive relations.


How do you try to bring in a practical approach towards subjects?

“Projects and practical classes to teach the best practices of the industry”

 We organize practical-oriented sessions for specific subjects like Data structures, Analysis and design of algorithms, database management systems, computer graphics and visualization and mobile application development. Various mini projects, internships and lab oriented sessions are managed within the department to impart industry-oriented skills.

What are the best practices offered by the department to the students?

“Live hands-on workshops and sessions are regularly organized for interested students”

 We usually conduct three to five days of hands-on workshops on the latest technologies. It includes full-stack development, android app development, Artificial Intelligence, deep learning, machine learning, etc. We also have MOUs with different industries and few startups. Resource professionals from each of the industries are also invited for expert talks.


How do you strategize the curriculum of your institute?

“Syllabus is designed by the university authorities based on latest trends”

We are affiliated with Visvesvaraya Technological University which is a remarkable technological university. Hence, our curriculum is designed by the university itself. It gets updated once in four years as per the trends. Suggestions and changes are regularly made to make the curriculum more student-oriented.


How does your department prepare students for Higher education and Placements?

“A dedicated placement cell and technical sessions on higher studies”

 In our department, all eligible students are given equal opportunity to get placed. There has been 100% placement in the Computer Science Department in Bangalore Institute of Technology and eligible students get placed in reputed companies. The toppers get placed with a pay package of INR 20-22 lakhs per annum. Regarding higher studies, we provide students with two hours of technical seminars on GATE Exams, Scholarship, GMAT, and education abroad etc.


Do you have any extracurricular activities to enhance the skills of the students?

“Student-centric clubs to give wings to their ideas and interests”

In our institution, we have 30 student clubs that include the entrepreneurship and development club, known as IEDC mainly to promote innovation and startup within student community. Also, other technical clubs, cultural clubs, rotary clubs, etc are promoted regularly in the college. From the department side, we have a student developer initiative club as well.

How does the department enhance the skills of the faculty?

“The College promotes faculties to participate in FDP’s and training sessions”

 AICTE or VTU often arranges a three to five days faculty development program on new syllabus, latest technologies of Computer Science & Engineering, deep learning, machine learning, etc. Our faculties are motivated and allowed to participate in them. They are given a free hand from their institutions and they will be given leave to participate in such workshops. Institute has made it mandatory for staff to take up online courses like NPTEL/ coursera for this purpose.
