New Delhi: Banaras Hindu University (BHU) conducted an open discussion on National Education Policy 2020 on January 12, 2022, in hybrid mode with participants from all over India. The discussion was conducted in collaboration with the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) under the Union Ministry of Education.
The participants in the discussion included multiple academicians, teachers, academic administrators, heads of departments, principals, state education board officials and other associates.
BHU arranged this discussion initially to gather input and ideas related to the National Professional Standards for Teachers (NPST) and National Mission for Mentoring (NMM) across the country. GraduallyThe varsity aims to prepare a blueprint for the implementation of the discussed issues.
There were two technical sessions, held on NPST and NMM respectively. HCS Rathore, the Vice-Chancellor of South Bihar Central University, Gaya presided over the first session. The second session was presided over by Madhulika Agarwal, dean of the BHU Faculty of Science.
Owing to the current situation, NCTE Chairperson Santosh Kumar Sarangi and Member Secretary Kesang Yangzom Sherpa participated in the discussion through online mode.
During his address, Sarangi referred to the importance of providing good training to the teachers, both before joining and during the work. According to him, through NPST, the teachers are to be divided into 4 categories- Progressive, Proficient, Skilled and Head Teachers.
Further, a module for the assessment of teachers is also being developed with the purpose of classifying them and enabling them to evolve in their professional field.
In addition to this, through NMM, educational institutions and systems are to be enriched by seeking advice from the experienced and retired teachers who are professionally active after their retirement as well.
Professor Anil Singh, also a participant in the discussion, focused on the fact that only those interested in teaching should take this profession. Teachers who opt for this profession by chance, cannot sincerely fulfil their responsibilities.
Former principal of Central Hindu School N K Shahi, another participant stressed on the importance of reflecting on every aspect of the National Education Policy carefully and adopting it. This is to ensure the implementation of positive chances in the future, he further added.
Among the other participants, Annapurna Dixit of Arya Mahila PG College, Mahesh Sharma from the Central University of Tibetan Studies also shared relevant suggestions regarding the subject enhancing the role of teachers and post-pandemic changes in the classroom atmosphere.
Last year, Delhi University also conducted an open house discussion on NEP 2020 in the North Campus. The event was organised jointly by the University of Delhi, NCTE and the Institute of LifeLong Learning (ILLL).
