Assam to Convert 26 Private Colleges into Government Institutes; Know More Here


December 20, 2021: As per the announcement made by Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, 26 private colleges in Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) will be made government institutes under the first phase of provincialisation. 

The decision to convert 26 private colleges of BTR to government institutes was made during a meeting held with the All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) and Bodo Sahitya Sabha (BSS). The meeting was held to discuss the development of education in Bodoland Territorial Region.

Assam: Plans for 26 Newly Converted Government Institutes

Under this initiative, the Higher Education Department will facilitate the government institutes and will be responsible for the status of the colleges, infrastructure, qualification of existing faculty among other requirements. 

Fresh Recruitments in New Private Colleges

The State Higher Education Department will check the need for fresh recruitment in colleges and will take necessary actions for the same. The department will ensure quality of education and education facilities in government-approved institutes in BTR. 

Referring to the decision, the Chief Minister’s Office said, “Decision was also taken in the meeting for creating adequate Bodo language teacher posts in schools in Bodo areas as per NEP 2020. Single cadre post creation will be done in all government and provincialized colleges".

Adding to the statement, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said, following the announcement, a campus of Bodoland University will now be established in Udalguri along with a science and law college in Bodoland Territorial Region.

Special Teacher Eligibility Test for New Colleges

All Bodo Students Union (ABSU) and Bodo Sahitya Sabha (BSS) will also conduct a special Teacher Eligibility Test (TET) for Bodo medium to recruit teachers and faculty members for new institutes. 

The Chief Minister has further directed the authorities to form an advisory committee to supervise and properly implement the decisions taken during the meeting. The committee will include the representatives of WPTBC Department, Education Department, ABSU, and BSS.

Assam: Benefits of Government Institutes in the State

As of now, the State Government is facilitating various Central Universities as well as the Institute of National Importance. The state has over 16+ government-run universities and various private and medical colleges and institutes. 

Top medical colleges in Assam, such as Assam Medical College and Diphu Medical College and Hospital fall under the state-funded category and offer admission seats to students under Srimanta Sankaradeva University of Health Sciences. 

Assam state also offers students with education facilities for law students. Various law colleges in the state are affiliated with Dibrugarh University, Gauhati University, and Assam University.

Under Assam Government-funded universities and colleges, students who belong to the socially backward category are provided with financial assistance. With this, the state government aims to offer equal opportunities to all students to pursue higher education with ease. 

The admission seats of various engineering and science colleges in states are allotted to students based on their Assam CEE 2021 examination scores. Students who wish to take part in the admission process are required to appear in the entrance examination. 

In addition to the decision made, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced to offer INR 5 lakh as ex-gratia to Malobika Daimary. She was recently injured by Forest Department personnel at Boko in Kamrup district. 

Following the decision, the funds will be offered to Malobika Daimary as her contribution to the safety of the Kamrup district. The chief minister further instructed the GMCH authorities to provide the best treatment to her.
