New Delhi: Ahmedabad University’s School of Arts and Sciences has launched an online course on ‘Literature for Life’ with the aim of promoting reading literature amongst the students both as source of pleasure and intellectual guide.
This online course by Ahmedabad University includes multiple lectures, class discussions, audio-visual methods of learning, role enactment, group work, etc.

The primary aim of this course is to introduce students to the diverse perspectives and multiple tools helpful in reading literary texts and providing them with a view towards adopting significant life lessons necessary to fulfil a wide array of individual, professional and societal goals.
As a significant part of this course, students will go through a close and critical reading of a prescribed set of texts including novels, short stories and plays selected from the works by Indian and International authors.
Students are to study texts from genres such as fable, romance, historical fiction, family saga, war and social conflict as per the official statement.
“It challenges students to read and analyze narrative fiction to enrich understanding of: self and significant relationships, role within organisations, value system that guides ethical choices”, the statement further added.
Using the methodology called “Transformative Reading” along with a variety of social and organisational theories, the programme is to encourage the students to study character, plot and context from the literary sources and draw parallels with their contemporary living reality, perceptions and social attitudes.
Key themes extracted from the prescribed texts such as “conflict”, “empathy”, “decision-making”, “responsibility”, “leadership”, “courage” and “attitude towards the other” will be addressed during the course through rigorous debates and analysis.

Upon the successful completion of the course, the students will be able to learn the ropes of the following:
- Interpret literary texts in terms of both personal relevance and conceptual perspectives.
- Identify key learning with regard to personal and professional decision-making, organisational expectations, and terms of engagement with society.
- Derive reflections for personal transformation based on the course readings.
- Articulate in written format insights drawn on each of the above aspects.
