Latest Updates: Indian Institute of Science Education and Research (IISER), Berhampur is inviting applications for admission to its PhD program starting from the August 2023 session. Interested candidates can apply online on the official website at iiserbpr.ac.in

Candidates can apply for PhD programs in Biological, Chemical, Mathematical, Physical and Earth & Environmental Sciences disciplines through the admission window. The last date to submit applications for IISER Berhampur PhD Admission 2023 is April 25, 2023. 

  • In order to be eligible, applicants must hold a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in the relevant stream. 
  • Candidates must also have a valid score in National Eligibility Test (NET)/ GATE/ UGC – JRF/ CSIR - JRF/ DBT (JRF A category)/ICMR (JRF category I)/NET-LS/INSPIRE-Ph.D./Rajiv Gandhi Fellowship/JGEEBILS or any other exam. 
  • Candidates will also have to appear for an interview.
  • The Doctoral Students are supposed to complete the course work, qualifying examination, seminars, and a dissertation. Besides the mandatory requirements, students are encouraged to participate in several professional activities such as workshops, review meetings and conferences.

IISER Berhampur PhD Eligibility Criteria 

For admission to PhD programs, an applicant possessing the qualifications mentioned below is eligible to apply:

  1. The candidates must hold a post-graduation degree (M.Sc. / M.Tech.) in the relevant discipline with an overall score of at least 60% marks or an overall CGPA/ CPI of at least 7.0 on a 10-point scale.
  2. Candidates with B.Tech./MBBS/MCA degrees who are exceptionally brilliant can also apply for PhD program in Biological Sciences.
  3. Applicant’s age should not exceed 28 years at the time of joining. Age relaxation of 3 years shall be given for OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) and 5 years for SC/ST/PD/Female applicants. Also, a National level examination like National Eligibility Test (NET)/GATE/UGC-JRF/CSIR-JRF/DBT (JRF A category)/ICMR (JRF category I)/NET-LS/INSPIRE-PhD/JGEEBILS or any other recognized score is mandatory. The certificate/fellowship must be valid at the time of admission OR the candidates must be BS-MS Dual Degree graduates of IISERs and B.Tech graduates of IITs with CPI >=8.
  4. For SC/ ST/ PD candidates, a relaxation of 5% of marks, or an equivalent relaxation of grade, will be allowed.

IISER Berhampur Ph.D. FAQs

Ques. Does IISER Berhampur also provide the course of Integrated PhD?

Ans. Yes, IISER Berhampur also provides the course of Integrated PhD in Biological, Chemical, Mathematical and Physical Sciences. It is a program that combines curricula of Masters and Doctoral degrees into a single integrated programme. The students enrolled in the PhD program will be entitled to get a 2-year MS fellowship and a PhD fellowship for a maximum of 5-year duration.

Ques. What are the eligibility criteria to apply for PhD in IISER Berhampur?

Ans.  Students with minimum 60% marks in aggregate (overall percentage with all subjects where an Honours system is not applicable) in Bachelor's or any equivalent degree are eligible OR 

Students must have scored 60% marks in the Honours/major subject in aggregate (where such a system is applicable) in Bachelor’s or any equivalent degree. If the scoring system follows a CGPI, the minimum score should be 6.0 on a 10-point scale.

Ques. Are candidates who are appearing or are about to appear for final examinations eligible to apply for a PhD program in IISER Berhampur?

Ans. Yes, candidates who are appearing or are about to appear for final examinations of the qualifying degree program are eligible to apply for PhD programmes. If selected, admission to the Ph.D. programme would be conditional upon their completing the qualifying degree with the defined marks criteria.

Ques. Can candidates whose CSIR-UGC NET Fellowship or Rajiv Gandhi Fellowship or INSPIRE-PhD or any other equivalent fellowship is awaited also apply in IISER Berhampur?

Ans. Yes, candidates whose CSIR-UGC NET Fellowship or Rajiv Gandhi Fellowship or INSPIRE-PhD or any other equivalent fellowship is awaited can also apply with their roll number(s) mentioned in the application. Such candidates may walk-in for the interview provided they have qualified examination for any of the above fellowship before the interview date. Such candidates will not be sent a call letter for the interview. However, they should write to the head of the department, Department of Physics at hod_phy@iiserbpr.ac.in (with a CC to caa@iiserbpr.ac.in) and inform if they will attend the interview.

Ques. Which Entrance Exam must be given for iPhD admission in IISER Berhampur?

Ans. For Admission to Biological Sciences, JGEEBILS (conducted in Dec 2019) or JAM -2020 (BL - Biological Sciences or BT - Biotechnology), for Chemical Sciences, JAM (Chemistry) 2020 must be given. While for Mathematical Sciences, JAM 2020 (MA - Mathematics or MS-Mathematical Statistics) or candidate must have a valid NBHM PhD examination score and for Physical Sciences, JAM (Physics) 2020 or JEST (Physics) 2020 must be given.
