Government Engineering College was started in the month of March 01, 1983 in Bastar, Chhattisgarh. It is located in between Dharampura, Negigudha, Gatpadmur and Kalipur. In starting the Civil Engineering program was offered by the college along with 20 entrance capacity. After a year in 1984 the Mechanical Engineering was started with a capacity of 30 and in the year of 2000, the Electronics and Information Technology were started with an entrance capacity of 30 each. In 2005-06, the Electrical Engineering was started with an admission capacity of 30 students. After that, Mining Engineering program was started in the year of 2009-10 along with the capacity of 60 students with two major courses. Structural Engineering in Civil and Thermal Engineering in Mechanical with 18 to 18 students intake. The college now offers 6 Undergraduate and 2 Post-graduate courses along with 3 part time degree and 2 part time diploma courses.

The college offers various special facilities to the students like Scholarships, Merit Scholarships, Minority Scholarships, Book Bank Facility and Special Coaching etc. They also provides state of the art infrastructure facilities for students such as Hostel, Library, Gymnasium and Internet etc. In hostel, the institute campus carries 144 beds in Boys Hostel and 100 beds in Girls Hostel where about 400 students are residing. The Central Government Girl's Hostel has sanctioned Rs. Two Crore for SC and ST students. The campus of institute is well - equipped with high speed internet facilities and Wi-Fi facility so that students can take advantage of availabile study materials.
