Dalhousie University offers a Doctor of Philosophy in Medical Research for a duration of 4 years.
It is an on-campus, thesis-based program offered on a full-time.
Medical Research program is offered jointly through Dalhousie Medical School and the Faculty of Graduate Studies.
The program allows the MD graduate to concentrate primarily on thesis research in Medical Sciences and to bridge the gap between clinical and basic medical research. The program also offers training in clinical research.
This involves classwork, participation in journal clubs and seminars, design and completion of an independent research project, successful defense of a thesis, and for PhD students a comprehensive exam.
Students usually take 3 to 4 years to complete this program.
In order to successfully complete this program, students must complete relevant course work as determined by their supervisory committee, with a passing grade.
Students have to complete an independent research study over a minimum of 24 months.
There will be a minimum requirement of one-half credit in the discipline most relevant to the research project. Additional courses may be required to provide the knowledge base required for the thesis research.
The goal of the program is to provide clinicians with structured and rigorous research training over 2 to 5 years that will equip them with the knowledge, skills, and experience to effectively incorporate research into their careers.
Faculty of Medicine is the first medical school in Canada to offer distributed learning postgraduate medical education.
It provides internationally-recognized faculty in undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing medical education

Eligibility & Entry Requirement

Academic Eligibility:

Students have to complete a thesis Master’s degree with first-class or it's equivalent from the recognized university.
A minimum GPA of at least 3.0/4.33 (B grade) in the last 60 credit hours of study is required to be eligible for the program.
All students must have an MD degree from an LCME accredited Medical School and students must be currently registered in a Canadian Royal College Accredited Residency Program.

Indian Student Eligibility:

Indian students are eligible to apply if they have completed a master's degree with first-class in a relevant field from a recognized institution.

Along with the minimum eligibility requirements, international students hailing from non-English speaking countries need to prove English proficiency through IELTS/TOEFL/any equivalent test.
