Virudhunagar Government Medical College Receives Approval from NMC for Admission to 150 MBBS Seats; Check Details Here


The newly established Virudhunagar Government Medical College has received an approval from the National Medical Commission (NMC) to start its functioning with an intake of 150 students for the MBBS course. 

As per reports, the Virudhunagar Government Medical College campus is still under construction, but the NMC members inspected the college infrastructure, examined the facilities to be offered to the students. 

Following the inspection, NMC which is India's apex medical education regulatory body, permitted the Virudhunagar GMC to start the admission process for the MBBS programme for this academic year 2021-22. 

The central government has sanctioned operations of 11 new medical colleges in the state from the current academic year, with Virudhunagar Government Medical College, being one of them

Recently, the Tamil Nadu State Health Minister M Subramanian said that the central government approved the addition of around 850 MBBS seats for admission in the seven of the 11 new government medical colleges in TamilNadu. 

Besides, medical colleges in Virudhunagar, Kallakurichi and Udhagamandalam (Ooty) also got an approval from the Union government to start the admission process for 150 MBBS seats in each college. 

Medical colleges in Namakkal, Ramanathapuram, Tiruvallur, and Tiruppur have also been granted admission intake of 100 students in the MBBS programme. Once the deficiencies are rectified, the government will soon seek a re-inspection of the four medical colleges to get a nod for admission to the remaining seats, the health minister said. 

Meanwhile, NMC has also approved of increasing MBBS seats from 150 to 200 at Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC) which is a consituent college of Aligarh Muslim University (AMU)

According to the data presented by MoS Health Dr Bharati Pravin Pawar, at present, there are a total number of 52 medical colleges in Tami lNadu, out of which 26 medical colleges are operated by the TN Government. As a result, a total number of 3650 MBBS seats in Tamil Nadu belong to the Government medical colleges. 

Virudhunagar Government Medical College: Infrastructure and Facilities 

According to reports, the Virudhunagar Government Medical College consists of a six-storey faculty block, cafeteria, bank and post office, an auditorium, two-storey administrative block, and a gymnasium. 

Besides, students can also avail of the separate hostel facility, while the faculty can opt for the residential quarters, which will be built on 25 acres of land on the Collectorate premises.

As per the reports, the Dean of the Medical College, J. Sangumani, said that the hospital has roughly 700 beds with all the equipment to attend to around 1,000 inpatients. A total of eight deliveries are made each day at the hospital and the doctors perform at least 10 to 12 procedures surgeries. 

The dean further informed that the medical college will have 140 faculty members in 22 departments and the construction of the college has been completed and is at an advanced stage. 

Meanwhile, the Virudhunagar Collector J. Meghanath Reddy said that the construction of a medical college and approval of additional MBBS seats is a matter of pride for the district.
