Uttarakhand Medical Colleges will be charging a reduced annual fee for MBBS courses offered at the state-level government colleges and universities. The decision was made in a cabinet meeting held on Thursday, on the same issue.
Subodh Uniyal, the Agriculture Minister stated that the Uttarakhand government slashed the fees of MBBS Course in the state's 18 government medical colleges from INR 4 lakhs to INR 1.45 lakh, which is the lowest rate in the country.
This made it India's first state to offer medical education at the lowest rates. Uniyal said that the medical students furnishing a bond to serve the state after five years of completing their medical education will have to pay the fees of INR 50,000 per year.
Earlier, the students studying medical courses in government colleges of Punjab had to pay INR 1.50 lakh for the first year and thereafter, it was raised by 15% per year for the remaining period of the course, said Uniyal.
Further, a government spokesperson said that a state team had looked into the fee structure of Uttarakhand medical colleges and compared it to other states only to find that Punjab was charging the lowest amount in its state medical colleges.
Following this, the Uttarakhand government decided to reduce the course fee to help the students pursue medical courses in India, the minister added.
Meanwhile, Uttarakhand also offers the concept of understanding a bond to the medical students. As a result of which the students who agree to the bond are required to serve in the state after their completion of the course.
As per the provisions of the bond, the doctor has to serve in a medical college in the first year, afterwhich, they need to serve in a primary health centre in a remote area of Uttarakhand.
Post this, the doctor would have to work for a period of two years in a district hospital or a hospital in a far-flung area of Uttarakhand. Therefore, students who sign the bond will have to pay INR 50,000 per year.
Earlier, all the Uttarakhand medical colleges had a provision of offering bonds to the students and they were asked to pay INR 50,000 per year.
However, during Trivendra Singh Rawat's tenure, the provisions were modified and it was offered to the medical colleges located in the hills like VCSG Srinagar, Uttarakahand.
Meanwhile, the cabinet has now changed the norms and decided to offer the bond in other medical colleges of the state like Haldwani Medical College and Doon Medical College.
