Recently, the Principal Secretary of Higher Education, Saswat Misra issued a letter announcing the commencement of the new academic year 2021-22 from June 1, 2021. As per the letter, the summer vacation which began on May 5 will come to an end on May 31, 2021. Therefore, the online classes will resume as per the previous guidelines.

Owing to the Covid-19 pandemic, physical classes will not commence anytime soon and even hostels will not function. Furthermore, the exam schedule will be notified soon once the board is informed about the UGC's decision.

On May 4, the government ordered all the educational institutions falling under the ambit of government administration to declare summer vacations for the students. The standard vacation arrangements were to be implemented by all the institutes across the state and this period also included the lockdowns and curfews imposed by the state authorities regarding the Covid-19 pandemic.

Once the cyclonic conditions across the state stabilize, the Council of Higher Secondary Education (CHSE), Odisha, will make a decision on the Class 12 board exams. Earlier, the Class 12 state board exams were scheduled to start from May 18, 2021 but were postponed indefinitely due to the surge in the Covid-19 cases.

The state education department is also looking at two options given by the Union Government. The first alternative is to conduct the Class 12 board exams according to the usual format once the Covid-19 situation normalizes in the country. Therefore, to implement this option, the authorities will either reduce the exam duration of each exam or reduce the number of exams,i.e., conduct exams for a few core subjects.
