UGC Urges Universities to Consider Applied Mathematics Introduced by CBSE for Admission; Details Here

The University Grants Commission (UGC) has urged all the universities to consider a new course, Applied Mathematics, for admission. CBSE has introduced this new subject for the students of classes 11 and 12.

UGC has said that the new subject, Applied Mathematics, introduced by CBSE will involve 80% marks for theory and the remaining 20 % marks for practical work in the board examination.

The new subject, Applied Mathematics, is a regular academic subject and in order to decide the eligibility for admission, the marks secured by the students in the Applied Mathematics will be considered for calculating the aggregate marks.

As per the sources, the Applied Mathematics will be considered at par with Mathematics while calculating the aggregate marks for admission in courses of humanities and commerce, other than pure sciences,

The UGC has sent a notice addressing and requesting the vice-chancellors of all universities to take necessary action for recognition of the new subject for the purpose of admission of students in the respective degree programs.

The CBSE notified that the course was initially launched to enhance the mathematical skills and knowledge of students required in social science, commerce, humanities, accountancy and other aligned fields.

Further, the new subject, Applied Mathematics, will be advantageous to the students, who want to pursue higher education in social sciences, commerce, fine arts, and biological sciences etc.

The board also urged universities to consider the new course at par with the existing Mathematics course of CBSE for admission to higher studies in courses other than Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences.
