September 14, 2021: University Grants Commission (UGC) has directed universities to prevent caste-based discrimination against SC and ST students, and be more sensitive while dealing with issues related to caste discrimination.
UGC has released an official notice regarding increasing caste discrimination against SC/ST students, which has now been distributed among various UGC-affiliated institutes. The letter was released after UGC received reports of caste-based discrimination against students.
Reports were lodged regarding discrimination against students and faculty members of the reserved caste in various top institutes across the country, not excluding the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). As a result, the apex higher education regulator has asked the commission to take strict action against it.
UGC official letter reads, “The Officials/faculty members should desist from any act of discrimination against SC/ST students on grounds of their social origin".
“If any such incident comes to the notice of the authorities, action should be taken against the erring official/faculty members promptly" the letter further reads.
UGC’s Measures on Caste Based Discrimination
The University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked universities and colleges to make an offical page regarding complaints of caste discrimination by SC/ST students on their official university website.
Additionally, universities and colleges have been directed to place a complaint registered in their official Registrar/Principal Office for the same purpose. The universities have been asked to motivate students to stand against caste discrimination activities on the campus.
UGC Official Notice to Prevent Caste Based Discrimination
Universities will also constitute a committee dedicated to preventing any caste-based discrimination on the campus ground against SC/ST/0BC Students /Teachers and non-teaching staff. The committee will deal with various issues related to caste discrimination.
As per the offical notice released by University Grants Commission, "Authorities are requested to advise the officials/faculty members of university/institute to be more sensitive while dealing with incidents of caste discrimination.”
