UGC Asks Universities to Encourage Students to Visit Atal Tunnel; Check Details Here


University Grants Commission (UGC) has asked universities and technical institutes to encourage their students to visit Atal Tunnel in Himachal Pradesh. Describing the tunnel as a technological marvel, UGC said the visit would be beneficial to the students as well.

UGC also directed the students to follow the Covid-19 guidelines as issued by the state and the centre. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the longest motorable tunnel in the world, the Atal Tunnel in October 2020.

Rajnish Jain, UGC secretary, said, "Situated at an altitude above 10,000 ft, this 9.02-km tunnel has been constructed in a tough and hostile climate, deploying the latest and best practices in tunnel technology with state-of-the-art features, including semi-transverse ventilation, SCADA controlled fire-fighting, illumination, and monitoring system," 

The all-weather tunnel will reduce the time of travel between Leh and Manali by 4 to 5 hours and decrease the distance by 46km. It also boasts of being the longest highway tunnel in the world. 

Rajnish Jain said that they desired that knowledge of that technological marvel, which is encompassed with the best practices in planning, construction, and engineering should also be seen by students.

He asked the universities to encourage visits so that the students could absorb the knowledge and appreciate the capabilities in tunnelling that that country now possesses. 

The tunnel itself is built in the Pri Panjal range of Hilamiyan range at an altitude of 3 km. The northern opening of the tunnel is located near Teling, Sissy in Lahaul Valley at 3071 meters while the southern opening is at 25 km from Manali at 3060 meters.
