TN Government seeks MCI approval for 800 MBBS seats this year; Check details


The Tamil Nadu government has sought the approval of the Medical Council of India (MCI) to add an additional 800 MBBS seats for the current academic year 2021-22, says Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma. Subramanian. 

Post the inspection of the construction work on the new Government Medical College in the district, the health minister said that the medical council of India (MCI) had already given a nod to admit a total of 850 MBBS students in seven of the 11 new medical colleges in TamilNadu. 

Following an inspection report by the NMC team, the MCI had also informed the TN State Government to upgrade the infrastructure, mostly civil works, in several medical colleges.

However, the state is now targeting a total of 1650 total MBBS seats in the new colleges across the state. Out of the 800 MBBS seats, 600 seats are being sought for the four new medical colleges in Krishnagiri, Ariyalur, Nagapattinam, and Dindigul, the minister said. 

He said that the state government has requested to increase the intake of students by 50 seats each taking the total to nearly 200 MBBS seats in Namakkal, Thiruvallur, and Ramanathapuram. Further, the officials along with the TN Health Minister will hold a meeting on October 27, with the Union Health Minister, on this regard.

Talking about the ‘Makkalai Thedi Maruthuvam’ scheme (healthcare at the doorstep of people), the minister said that the scheme has benefited approximately 25 lakh people across the state. As a result, the state government has decided to offer treatment to one crore people under the scheme this year. 

The Minister concluded saying that the TamilNadu government has taken steps to renovate and improve the primary health centres. Earlier, Ma. Subramanian had a meeting with Collector Dr Arun Thamburaj regarding Covid-19 situation in the district.
