To abide by Covid-19 protocol Tamil Nadu Colleges restricted attendance to 20%-50% since institutions reopened on Monday. Covid-19 test and quarantine has been mandatory for final year undergraduate and postgraduate students who are joining colleges from January 4.
Despite expressing interest about physical classes initially, many students did not show up. Many colleges, including IIT Madras, Loyola College have closed canteens and only offered takeaways. Loyola College is conducting both offline and online classes, around 60% of final year students showed interest in the physical classes.
Thomas Amirtham, principal of Loyola College informed that 30% students turned up. He also explained that many students found it tough as they have to strictly follow the rules like social distancing. Also for hostel students of Tamil Nadu Colleges, Covid test is mandatory before coming. He said, adding 300 students came among a total of 500 students.

400 students came on the first day at Madras Christian College , where Covid tests are required to join the class. Principal Paul Wilson informed that around 100 students took the RT PCR test. Gathering of students on campus was strictly prohibited and wearing masks was mandatory. The college canteen was close but four counters were opened for takeaways.
Principal S Santhosh Baboo of DG Vaishnav College said there was a rise of attendance of 10% compared to December adding "More may come after the Pongal holidays,”
Rosy Joseph, principal of Stella Maris College said that in their college the student attendance was 50%. Rosy added the students who are coming from outside Tamil Nadu and India were being quarantined. She also added “We are using lecture halls and bigger classrooms where we can maintain social distancing even with full attendance,”
