12th Board Exam 2021: Several States in favour of Conducting Exams; Read Updates


The Ministry of Education, India organised a high-level meeting on Sunday to discuss class 12th board exams 2021 for various boards including CBSE, CISCE and all state boards. With the safety of students remaining a major concern, most of the states were in favour of conducting exams.

The meeting was chaired by Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal while other Union Ministers, namely Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and Women and Child Development Minister Smriti Irani were also present in the meeting. Even the State Education Ministers were also present for the discussion. 

While no final decision was taken, yet it came to light that most of the states were in favour of conducting 12th Board Exam 2021. A few, however, suggested conducting the exams only after vaccinating the students and teachers.

12th Board Exam 2021: What States Have to Say?

Most of the state has supported CBSE’s proposal to conduct Class 12th Exam for only 19 major subjects in a shorter way in the month of July-August 2021. As per the first proposed opinion, the exams will be conducted for the major subjects only i.e 19 subjects out of 174 subjects in two phases, from July 15- 30 and August 1-14. Under the second option, the board has also mentioned to wind up the exams in just 45 days where it has notified that the students will appear for the major subjects at their home centres only and also time duration for the exams will be shortened. 

Assam: As per reports, Assam is in favour of conducting both 10th and 12th board exams. The state will release the dates soon after the situation comes under control.

Delhi: Manish Sisodia has declined the options of CBSE Class 12 Exam 2021. The minister said his government is not in favour of the options given by CBSE to conduct the exams, he added that it will be a big mistake if we go ahead without vaccinating students.

Goa: The state government of Goa has not taken any decision. For now, 10th board exams have been cancelled by the state and the decision about the Goa Board Class 12 Exam will be taken in 2 days. 

Punjab: Vijay Inder Singla, the Education Minister of Punjab said that the first priority during these difficult times should be the safety of students and teachers. The minister suggested that PSEB exams of only three elective subjects should be conducted.

Karnataka: Karnataka Education Minister Suresh Kumar said that it is very important to conduct 12 board exams in the interest of students' future. He added that the state would be conducting Karnataka PUC II exams when the situation comes under control. The state government has said that option B is plausible for conducting CBSE 12 board exams. As per Option B, examinations will be conducted in the same schools where the students are enrolled only for major subjects.

Chattisgarh: Chattisgarh is also in favour of conducting the CGBSE exams. The state has decided to conduct the exams in offline mode where students would write the exams from their homes and the dates have already been shared by the state.

Tamil Nadu: TN Government is also in favour of conducting the exams. However, the state education minister suggested conducting the Tamil Nadu Board Exam 2021 exams only when it is safe. "Similar to other states, Tamilnadu also wanted to conduct the exams as they play an important role in students' career."

Maharashtra: The state is not in favour of conducting the exams. Varsha Gaikwad, the state education minister, said that the option for a "non-examination route" should also be examined for Maharashtra Board Class 12 exams keeping in mind that the new strain is more vulnerable to children.

Odisha: The state education minister Samir Ranjan Dash said that Odisha class 12th can either be conducted when there is some improvement in the situation or they can be cut short. As for Odisha's board exams, he said that the state is busy preparing for ensuing cyclones and that a decision will be taken soon. Similar to various other states, Odisha was also in favour of conducting the exams.

Kerala: Kerala government suggested vaccinating students before the DHSE exams. The state education minister said, "The state is ready to conduct the exams if the MOE decides to proceed with the exams."

Gujarat: The State Education Minister said that the state will conduct the GSHSEB 12th board exams once the COVID situation comes under control.

Uttar Pradesh: Dinesh Sharma, the state education minister said that the decision on UP board Class 10th and 12th exams will be finalised after discussions with the CM Yogi Adityanath and the results will be declared within one month of conducting the exams.

West Bengal: The state has not cancelled any of the two board exams till now. The decision about the WBBSE Madhyamik Exam 2021 and 12th exams will be finalised within a week.

Jharkhand: Jharkhand Education Minister Hemant Soren said, holding board exams in the state for Jharkhand class 12th would not be appropriate due to the surge in the present COVID situation. 

As for the final decision, it is likely to be taken by June 1, 2021 in collaboration with the states, the Ministry of Education infomed. The Ministry of Education has asked for suggestions from states by May 25, 2021, on CBSE's two options for conducting 12th examinations

The first option was conducting exams at designated subjects for 19 major subjects. While, as per second option the 12th exams can be conducted twice by the board depending upon the conductive situation. As for the states, the ministry has left the decision with respective state governments.

After the meeting, the Union Education Minister said that, "The Meeting was a great success as we received a great amount of valuable suggestions. I have requested the state governments to send their detailed suggestions by May 25th and I am confident that we will be able to finalise a collaborative decision regarding the exams and remove uncertainty among students and parents by informing them of our final decision,” he added.
