School Reopening in India: As COVID-19 cases across the nation are dropping below 30,000 on a daily basis, several states and Union Territories have planned to reopen schools that were shut down since March due to the pandemic.
Some states and union territories have decided to resume normal classes gradually from January 01, while some have planned to reopen the schools only for the senior students.

The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) had also issued guidelines for school reopening in India wherein the states and UTs are provided with the authority to make the decision on the reopening of classes in a graded manner.
MHA had stated their decision on reopening of schools in consultation with respective institution’s management according to their assessment of the situation. It had mentioned that online mode of teaching shall be continued and promoted in all schools.

Mentioned below are the states that are planning to reopen the schools from January:
- Pune: The schools for students from classes 9 to 12 in Pune shall reopen from January 04. Schools in the state will have to strictly abide by protocols of COVID-19.
- Assam: The state government has decided to reopen Assam schools and other educational institutions from elementary to University level from January 01.
- Karnataka: Government of Karnataka has permitted schools to resume classes for standard 10 and 12 students. However, students who want to attend classes will have to bring along written permission from their parents. The Education Minister said that Vidyagama programmes for classes 6 to 9 will commence from January 01.
- Bihar: All the coaching centres and government schools in Bihar will reopen from January 04, 2021. The order states that the classes for senior students in Bihar shall resume from January 04, and the junior sections will also reopen after assessing the situation for 15 days.
- Puducherry: On January 04, all schools in Puducherry shall reopen. The schools will initially have half-day classes from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm and then will resume full-day classes from January 18. Education Minister R Kamalakannan stated that all the basic safety norms would be adopted by the institutions.
Meanwhile, states like Rajasthan, Jharkhand, Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Sikkim, and Madhya Pradesh have already resumed the classes for students of standard 9 to 12, considering the upcoming board examinations.
