The Central government has officially sent out a letter of approval to the Raigad Guardian Minister Aditi Sunil Tatkare confirming the approval of setting up of the first-ever medical college in the Raigad district.
The Minister said that the medical college will be set up at Usar in Alibag. The Director, Medical Education and Research, Mumbai has been allotted approximately 52 acres of land at Usar for the construction of the new government medical college and a 500-bed hospital.
The National Medical Commission (NMC) had already visited the site where the buildings and schools at RCF Colony were taken over on a three-year contract for starting the Alibag Government Medical College even before receiving the letter of approval from the Central government. The medical college site is spacious enough for students, officials, and conference - lecture rooms.

According to the Hindu reports, the department of Medical Education and Medicine has officially approved for 1,072 posts so far and its affiliated 500-bed hospital over the next four years for an estimated amount of INR 61.68 crore.
Moreover, the minister has informed the medical aspirants from Raigad and Konkan to seek admissions to the medical colleges as the first batch will commence from December 2021, onwards with a total target of 100 students.
The new government medical colleges are being set up in different parts of India including Uttar Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh and West Bengal. The former Union Minister for Health and Family Welfare Harsh Vardhan had said in the Rajya Sabha that there are around 157 medical colleges in several states of the country in different stages of development since the year 2014.
As per the announcement, these include 58 medical colleges in phase 1 and 24 in phase 2 and another 75 in phase 3.
