Punjab state government has announced to establish 4 new government medical colleges at a cost of Rs 1,500 crore in the state, said Medical Education and Research Minister, O P Soni.

State Minister OP Soni added, after laying the foundation stone of the boundary wall of Dr B R Ambedkar State Institute of Medical Sciences, the four new government colleges will be set up at Mohali, Malerkotla, Kapurthala, and Hoshiarpur
There will be no dearth of doctors in Punjab as soon 500 doctors will graduate every year from these medical colleges. Currently, there are around 1,400 MBBS seats in medical colleges across Punjab, and once the medical colleges reopen, the seats will go up by 500, he said. Approximately 80 per cent of the medical faculty have been recruited for the medical college at Mohali and the hiring process is going on for the paramedics and other supporting staff, he added.
The construction of the medical college will soon start and the building will have an academic block, four lecture theatres, labs, hostels, faculty residences, library, auditorium and a community centre. Around INR 325 crores will be spent to construct the infrastructure while INR 50 crore will be spent to buy high-tech medical equipment at the Mohali Medical College, he said.
At the same time, consultants have been approved for Hoshiarpur and Kapurthala medical colleges, while building designs are being reviewed, he said. Once the building designs are finalised, tenders will also be floated. OP Soni was accompanied by the Health Minister, Balbir Singh Siddhu to the foundation-laying ceremony, where Siddhu thanked the panchayats of Jujharnagar and Behlolpur for leasing out over 10 acres to the medical colleges.
