Odisha Schools: Govt. Changes Norms for Closure/ Merger of Schools in KBK Region


Odisha Government: On November 23, the Odisha Government informed the Assembly the primary and upper primary sections of the Odisha schools having less than 15 students and not 20 as decided originally will be considered for either closure or merger in scheduled areas as well as in backward Kalahandi-Bolangir-Koraput (KBK) area.

The School and Mass Education Minister, SR Dash stated that the regulations decided for the merger/ closure of schools in scheduled areas will also be applied to institutes situated in the KBK region.

The initial decision of the Odisha Government was to close or merge the Odisha schools having less than 20 students and the notification released in relation to this will be revised soon, the Minister added.

According to the opposition parties’ statement, the government has only changed the norms for the closure of Odisha schools in scheduled and non-scheduled areas, but it has not taken the backward KBK area into consideration.

The minister stated that the state government has changed the norms for shutting down Odisha schools considering the views expressed by the members of the opposition parties.

The Congress Legislature Party leader Narasingha Mishra and the Leader of Opposition PK Naik of BJP, both had unanimously raised the issue in the House.

The KBK region at present has eight districts - Nuapada, Kalahandi, Subarnapur, Balangir, Rayanagar, Nabarangpur, Malkangiri, and Koraput.
