The Odisha government has declared a reduction of tuition fees in all aided and unaided private schools for the academic session 2020-2021 in view of the ongoing COVID-19 Pandemic. The decision taken by the state govt. has brought great relief to students and their parents.
As per the notification released by the School and Mass Education Department on Tuesday, stated that the reduction of tuition fee will be made in seven different slabs. There will be no reduction for schools charging INR 6,000 per annum. However, those charging between INR 6,001 to INR 12,001 will cut down the tuition fee by 7.5 per cent.
Further, twelve per cent deduction for tuition fees between INR 12,001 and INR 24, 000 annually, 15 per cent for fees from INR 24,001 to INR 48,000.
While school tuition fees of INR 48,001 to INR 72,000 would be reduced by 20 per cent, 25 per cent reduction for Rs 72,001 to Rs 1 lakh fees and 26 per cent for fees above Rs 1 lakh per annum would be witnessed.
The notification added that schools cannot charge fees from students for food and transport facilities. Although a 30 per cent waiver will be provided on hostel fees.

The state government decided after a High Court directive asked the government to reduce the fees in all aided and unaided private schools for the academic session 2020-21 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
School and Mass Education minister, SR Dash informed the media, "We hope that the aided and unaided private schools will abide by the court order."

Earlier, several parents' associations went to the High Court after the state government and the schools refused to waive the fees even as schools remained shut because of the pandemic. Answering to a Public Interest Litigation (PIL), the state government had informed the High Court that it had no power to change fees structure fixed by private schools.
Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had announced previously this month about the reduction of examination fees of Class 10 students, who would take the board examinations in 2021. The decision would support six lakh students. Patnaik added in a statement that the government would bear INR 27 crores towards the fees exemption.
