Northeastern States Not to Resume Normal Classes in Schools; Read Full Story


Northeastern states have taken varied decisions in reopening of schools on a regular basis after the schools remain closed for the past 7 months.

The Assam government has ordered to reopen schools and other educational institutions regularly on November 2, 2020.

Officials reported that Tripura and Manipur have not yet decided to reopen the schools on a regular basis.

The government of Mizoram has stated that the schools in the state will remain closed till December 2020 to control the spread of the coronavirus.

The government of Meghalaya has permitted the schools in rural areas to be reopened on December 1, 2020, for students of above class 6 with the parent's consent.

The schools will be reopened for students in urban areas only for classes 11 and 12 from December 1, 2020. No state in the northeastern part of India has yet decided to reopen schools for students below class 5.

Uttam Kumar Chakma, Director of Tripura Education Department has stated that from October 15, 2020, 50 percent of teachers were visiting the school campus.

The students of classes 9 to 12 of Tripura state were allowed to visit the school for counselling sessions with teachers with their parent's consent.

The committee set up by the state government has suggested reopening the schools and other educational institutions from December 1 but the Tripura Government on its own hasn't yet declared any announcement on the same, stated Chakma.

Chakma also permitted students of classes 6 to 8 to visit schools for counselling and doubt clearing sessions with their parents or guardian's permission.

Lahkmen Rymbui, Education Minister of Meghalaya board has stated that parents or guardians should provide permission to their children to visit the schools and attendance would not be made compulsory.

A senior education department official at Manipur Board stated that no government order has been issued yet to reopen the schools.

Both the private schools and government schools will remain closed until the state government issues a specific notification regarding the reopening of schools.

The senior official also stated that the union home ministry has permitted a partial reopening of schools by following the standard operating procedure (SOP)

Lalchandama Ralte, education minister of Mizoram Board stated that all the schools and educational institutions in Mizoram will remain closed till December 2020.

The regular classes have been currently scheduled to commence on January 15, 2020, but the final decision would be taken by the state executive committee.

The officials from the Education Department of Assam stated that they have reopened the regular schools for classes 9 to 12 on November 2, 2020, following the SOP issued by the department.

The hostels were not permitted to reopen and attendance was not made mandatory. Students should visit the schools only with parents' consent, stated the official.

The official also stated that students will be permitted to attend schools on alternative days and not all students will be allowed to visit the school on the same day. The school authorities were instructed to follow the social distancing norms and following SOPs were made compulsory.
