Mumbai FYJC Admissions: 1.86 lakh Seats Remained Vacant After Round 3 in MMR; Check Details Here

More than 1.86 lakh first-year junior college (FYJC) seats still remain vacant in Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) even as the 3rd round of admission wrapped up on December 18.

In MMR, 45,402 students were allotted colleges in the 3rd list on December 15. However, only 13,109 students took admission. December 18 was the last day to take admission. After the 3rd round, colleges will now surrender the vacant seats under all quotas by December 19.

As per the state education data, nearly 80000 seats were vacant in 3 quotas with 58000 of them being from minority quota. Maharashtra state education department will now declare college wise vacancies for the special round on December 20. The schedule for the special round has not yet been declared.

A principal from south Mumbai said, “While most high scorers have already taken admissions, those with average scores might have tried for a better college during the last two rounds. Most prominent colleges thus have filled most of their general seats,”

In 2019, more than 1.70 lakh seats remained vacant after the 3rd round in MMR. Last year a total of 3.19 lakh seats were up for grabs compared to this year's 3.2 lakh.

The state education department had declared that they would be discontinuing the first come first serve (FCFS) policy from this year. Instead, students who do not get admission would be allowed to take part in special rounds.

FCFS rounds were introduced in 2018-2019 but were widely criticized by many parents and students. FCFS rounds usually followed the regular rounds and allowed students to take admission against a vacant seat on the basis of being the first one to claim them.
