The decision was taken after a lot of medical students had organized protests and participated in Twitter campaigns to demand postponement of examinations. According to them, if the exams will be held according to their irregular schedule, many students would suffer.
The students complained about the ineffectiveness of online classes and insufficient time for the preparation of the exam. In addition, a complete lack of practical work also affected their studies and as such, they were in no condition to give the exam in January, 2021.
In the Twitter campaign that was organized to demand the postponement of the exam, more than 25000 students had participated. In addition, a delegation of AIDSO Karnataka also submitted a memorandum demanding the deferment of exams to the vice-chancellor of Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS).

The vice-chancellor of RGUHS, Dr. S. Sacchidanand said that the MBBS exams were delayed keeping the current situation in mind. He said that the deferment is based on the guidelines as provided by the National Medical Commission.
He further said that not every student was against the idea of holding the exams in January. Many students are concerned about the effect that delaying the Karnataka MBBS exams by more than a month would have on the academic calendar.
Dr. S. Sacchidanand said that there was already a clear division of opinion among the student body. Students in odd batches have already taken their examination. He said that students in odd batches were the ones who had back-papers and as such, they could not afford any kind of delay in their examination.
This was because any delay in the examination result would directly affect their chances of securing an internship or job.
