Thousands of students and their families will be relieved by the news. However, the criteria for promoting students have not yet been announced. It is expected that similar to CBSE, students will be promoted en masse based on their internal evaluation. More details are expected soon.
The Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education, also known as the Maharashtra Board, had previously postponed the SSC and HSC Exams 2021. However, shortly after the announcement, the Central Board of Secondary Education, CBSE, announced its decision to cancel all Class 10 exams and postpone all Class 12 exams. With the developments, many people urged the Maharashtra Board to follow suit and cancel the state's Class 10 or SSC exams in 2021.
Cancellation of SSC and Class 10 Board Exams in 2021
While not all state boards have made the decision, many are following CBSE's lead. CISCE, or the Council for Indian School Certificate Examination, also announced today that the ICSE Class 10 Board Exams, or ICSE Exams 2021, will be canceled. The decision follows an earlier announcement to simply postpone the ICSE and ISC Exams in 2021.
Telangana Board has also decided to postpone the Class 10 Board Exams in 2021. The examinations for the Meghalaya Board, as well as other boards such as AP and UP, have only been postponed for the time being.
However, in Maharashtra, many people emphasised the importance of cancelling the Class 10 Board examinations. With the number of cases in the country and in Maharashtra steadily increasing, experts say it is critical to make a decision soon. Exams are being postponed until 2021.
Up to 18 lakh students are expected to register for the Maharashtra SSC Board Exams 2021, with another 16 lakh registering for the Maharashtra HSC Board Exams 2021. While many academics emphasise the importance of exams, they also acknowledge that these are exceptional circumstances.
“Maharashtra is already under a partial lockdown. Over 60 thousand daily cases paint a bleak picture as well. As a result, the government must decide to cancel SSC Exams in order to ensure continuity and to put lakhs of students at ease. HSC exams should also be shortened and postponed until July,” says Ms. Deepanita, a teacher at a reputable school in Mumbai.
Many other experts have expressed their concerns about social media and Twitter, urging the Maharashtra government to take notice. Adv. Anubha Shrivastava Sahai, who has been tirelessly advocating for students, has lauded the decision of CBSE and CISCE and has also asked state governments to follow the example of the national boards.
“State GOVTs are requesting a uniform decision for board students, but they are unwilling to accept the CBSE decision. Make a unified decision based on it. No one is stopping to watch what the CBSE is doing and to take advice from them,” she writes on Twitter.
Meanwhile, the Maharashtra HSC Board Exams 2021 decision is still pending. The exams have been postponed for the time being, and new dates will be announced soon. In Maharashtra, schools are still closed. According to reports, the government is considering a total lockdown in order to flatten the curve.
On a national level, the country is still reeling from the second wave of COVID. On Monday, April 19, 2021, as many as 2.59 lakh new cases were reported in India. This, while slightly lower than the previous day, is still significantly higher than the peak of the pandemic's first wave. The number of fatalities at 1760 is also a sharp rise from previous date. The total number of active cases in the country is now 20,31,977.
