Maharashtra: Over 88% Schools Reopened for Classes 9 to 12; Check Details Here


Maharashtra government has permitted to reopen the schools almost a month later and 88% of the schools have reopened for classes 9 to 12 and over 15 lakh students have attended the physical classes as of January 4, 2021.

Teaching and Non-Teaching staff had to undergo the RT-PCR tests in order to resume their duties, only when test reports are negative they were allowed to attend the school. Almost 2 lakh Teaching and Non-teaching staff underwent the RT-PCR test and only 2894 were positive.

The government of Maharashtra has provided permission to reopen the school and resume physical classes for students of classes 9 to 12 on November 23, 2020.

In the first week, out of the 22,204 schools in Maharashtra, only 9127 schools were reopened and 2.9 lakh students attended schools. Following that 19,524 schools were reopened and nearly 15.4 lakh students attended as of January 4.

Vikas Garad, the deputy director of Maharashtra State Council of Education Research and Trainings (MSCERT) stated, “Fortunately, there hasn’t been a single case of Covid-19 reported from schools and that has encouraged a lot many people to reopen. Students attend classes on alternate days which means about 30 lakh students are now back to the classroom. Some parents continue to be worried to send their children to school but the numbers are increasing each week.”

In Jalgaon district of Maharashtra, 100% of the schools were reopened with almost 53% of students attending the classes.

Varsha Gaikwad, the School Education Minister stated that in almost 16 districts of Maharashtra, more than 90% of the schools were reopened and the school authorities and the government officials should be credited for that. 

Gaikwad also added that the safety of the children is the first priority and hence strict COVID 19 protocols will be implemented in the schools.

Only in Mumbai and Thane districts of Maharashtra, the schools are not yet reopened. Recently, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation announced that the schools will remain closed in the city till January 15, 2021.
