Maharashtra Govt to Set up its First Sports University in Pune; Details Here


Maharashtra’s Sports Minister Sunil Kedar stated on Thursday (December 17, 2020), that the state’s first International Sports University will be set up in Pune district. The admission process will begin from the 2021-22 session. The university will rope in faculties of different kinds of Sports and indulge in its research to nurture international-level sportspersons. 

The minister added, "The Balewadi sports complex (in Pune) will be upgraded to the level of a university which will get an initial funding of Rs 400 crore with the creation of 213 posts. The university's faculties and its various researches would cover sports-related science, medicine, technology, coaching and training, sports management and sports media and communication, among others.”

Earlier last week, the Maharashtra cabinet has given its nod by approving a bill concerning the establishment of an international sports university. In an official notification, it was declared that the university will be set up by the Government of Maharashtra. A statement from the office of CM Uddhav Thackeray said that the approved bill will be put in effect during the winter session next week. 

Former VC of Mumbai University, Vijay Khole headed the committee responsible for drafting this bill. Meanwhile, the Maharashtra Cabinet has also given approval for a bill regarding the establishment of DY Patil Agriculture and Technical Self Financed University in the city for Kolhapur.  

During the winter session, the bill will be introduced to the cabinet. As per the CMO statement, the University is scheduled to be introduced during the academic year 2021-2022

The Maharashtra cabinet has also given its approval for the introduction of a solar energy production policy which will supervise the distribution of 1 lakh solar energy pumps annually over the upcoming 5-year duration. 

The policy anticipates that 10,000 houses will receive power provided from the solar plant each year. The statement expressed that an estimate of INR 75,000 crore will be invested to facilitate the solar power facility.
