Following the decision taken by Supreme Court on Wednesday regarding Maratha reservation, admission to most courses across the state will not be affected. As per the SC, admissions of Maratha students under the quota done before September 9 will remain secure.
Admission in various degree colleges in the state had concluded by the first week of September 2020. This included the completion of Round 1 of junior college admissions. When the SC interim order was issued, admissions were put on hold by the SC for more than two months, despite appeals from the state.
In November 2020, the state accepted the interim order and put it into practice. Admissions for the academic year 2020-2021 resumed without the Maratha quota. Following this, students belonging to the Maratha quota had to apply under the open quota for admission.
Under the Maratha quota, 17,844 out of 3.1 lakh seats were reserved for the Maratha students. 2,923 students had already applied under the quota, out of which 2,309 were allotted seats prior to the SC’s interim stay. These students don't have to worry, since their admission under the quota will remain safe. The state had let Maratha quota students avail of the 10% EWS quota.
Starting in 2022, about 40,000 seats will be available under FYJC. This order has been well received by medical aspirants who were among the petitioners since they belong to the open quota. This is due to the fact that the seats for medical students were reduced by 12% due to the quota reservation.
