Lucknow University is witnessing an increase in the number of admission of overseas students for PhD courses from a meagre 4 enrollments in 2016 to 104 in 2020, despite the COVID-19 pandemic.
Foreign students applying to Lucknow University for Ph.D. programs till 2016 were recorded in single digits. This number increased to 33 suddenly in 2018; 52 in 2019; and then 135 in 2019.
Students from Italy and Indonesia are applying for doctorate programs in Hindi from the university, while Ph.D. among foreign students are becoming more popular.

Lucknow University’s International student advisor, Arif Ayyubi confirms the final number of foreign students as 104 in 2020.
Ayyubi credits the increase in the number of students to changes introduced in the department including offering international level facilities in hostels and making the food accessible as they like.

Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) scheme has made the maximum number of foreign students from Afghanistan. Along with this, there are students from nations from which Lucknow University has never had before like, i.e, Italy, and Thailand.
One of the most popular courses among foreign students is the MBA program. Four students from Iran are joining the university for the first time this year. Ayyubi said that the college treats these students far better in comparison to their Indian partners.

With ICCR grants, the fee is repaid by the central government and is around seven to eight times higher than what others pay.
Ayyubi also said that all the students applying to the university till now are fluent in English thus, language isn't an issue. But still, special attention is given to them by teachers and guides to make them feel at home.
