The Kerala state government has decided to drop plans of taking over DM Wayanad Institute of Medical Sciences, Medical College for Nursing and Pharmacy along with all its associated institutions.
The decision was taken in a high-level meeting convened by the Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. The plan to take over the DM WIMS of Medical Sciences was dropped after the committee, chaired by the Chief Secretary, submitted its feedback on financial and technical aspects of the takeover.
The government will now work on establishing a new government medical college on its own. The high-level meeting was attended by cabinet ministers E Chandrasekharan and KK Shailaja along with Chief Secretary Vishwas Mehta, law secretary PK Aravindbabu and health principal secretary Rajan Khobragade.
The statement released by the CM Office said that the takeover proposal submitted by the DM WIMS Education Research Foundation was ‘impractical’ and thus the plan has been dropped. The government will hunt for the appropriate land for the new government medical college construction along with the health department.
Last year on November 2, the Chief Minister had instructed to set-up a committee chaired by the Chief Secretary to review and further examine the takeover proposal.
Earlier in July, a new committee was entrusted to study the infrastructure, financial, and equipmental aspects of the medical college after the DM WIMS management proposed for a takeover.
The managing trustee of the WIMS Management, Azad Moopen, had asserted that the proposal will help to improve the healthcare delivery service and overall medical education in the Wayanad region.
