December 14, 2020: Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy has made a plea to Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa to introduce Konkani as a medium of education in the state of Karnataka.
Additionally, Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy had requested CM to consider the proposed National Education Policy (NEP), which lays stress on education in the mother tongue.

In a letter to the Chief Minister, the academy noted that there were 25 lakh plus Konkani-speaking people in the state, and three religions and forty-two communities in which the people use this language.
As per the National Education Policy (NEP), the medium of instruction till class 5 should be in the regional language or mother tongue. As a result, Konkani should be used as a medium of education up to class 5 and should be offered as a subject afterward.

Konkani has already been added as a third language for interested students up to class 10 in accordance with the options in both Kannada and Devanagiri scripts.
Karnataka Konkani Sahitya Academy also requested the government to include Konkani as a subject in courses like B.Ed. and M.Ed. and asked to appoint more Konkani educators.
In accordance with the National Education Policy, several changes like Board’s exam patterns and flexibility of subjects, no rigid separation between the Science and Arts streams are made to make reforms in the pattern of education for students in classes 10 and 12.
This is the first education policy of the 21st century to replace the 34-year old National Education Policy that was structured in 1986.
