Karnataka Government Inks MoU with British Council for Advancement in Higher Education


On December 17, 2020, the British Council and Karnataka Government signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to further bilateral cooperation in higher education. This agreement aims to advance research and support the internationalization of higher educational institutes.

The collaboration between the British Council and Karnataka Government will contribute to an increase in social and research linkages in the field of Higher Education between the two entities, stated an official release from the CMO. 

It further said that the MoU between the Karnataka State Council and British Council for Higher Education aims towards a more profound collaboration between the state and the United Kingdom to achieve the outcomes envisioned through the New Education Policy of the Centre.

The chief priority of the MoU is to advance research and support the internalization of higher education institutes. Additionally, students’ mobility and faculty interchange across the higher education institutes in the UK and Karnataka will also be the main focus of this collaboration.

As per the official statement released, both the entities have decided to work closely to strengthen Karnataka’s higher education academic landscape via systemic initiatives. 

Systemic initiatives include leadership development for faculty and education and research collaborations between the institutions of the UK and the state.

The MoU was signed in the presence of UK Secretary of State for Foreign and Development Affairs, Dominic Raab, Chief Minister BS Yediyurappa, and Deputy Chief Minister CN Ashwath Narayan amongst others.

Yediyurappa stated that both governments are signing a first-of-its-kind three years MoU comprising collaboration on leadership development in higher education institutions.

Karnataka‘s Global Innovation Alliance (GIA) has linked-up with countries across the globe in order to contribute to the state's global image as the leading tech hub. 

The UK has been a very significant GIA partner for Karnataka and 38 per cent of UK investment into India in 2017-18 came into Karnataka, stated the Chief Minister.

He further informed that the Government’s Urban Development department has partnered with the United Kingdom via the Climate Resilient Cities for Shared Prosperity Urban Development Programme.

The collaboration will deliver a transformational project on the design and delivery of Multimodal Transport Hubs in Bengaluru, along with an Integrated Transport Authority and Transport Observatory in partnership with UK Catapults. 

India Director of British Council Barabara Wickham OBE stated that the MoU is a further step in inculcating the mutual vision of a deep, strong UK-India education collaboration, and supporting India’s NEP 2020 knowledge ambitions.

She further said that through this MoU, they look forward to creating more education and employment opportunities for aspiring students of Karnataka and also support the state’s vision for stronger higher education systems.

South India Director of British Council, Janaka Pushpanathan stated that upskilling and employability is a focus area for governments across the world. 

They are co-developing programs as a part of MoU. This entire process will help in driving the desired outcomes for both the UK and Karnataka.
