ISRO, AICTE, FOSSE, and IIT Bombay to Promote Indian Satellite Imagery by Hosting Joint Mapathon; Check Details Here


All India Council of Technical Education (AICTE) in collaboration with Indian Space and Research Organization (ISRO), Free Open Source Software in Education (FOSSE), and IIT Bombay is hosting an online mapathon to promote the use of Indian Satellite Imagery. 

In addition, the mapathon will also promote the use of other educational tools for developing resource maps. 

Candidates who are interested could apply for this mapathon by visiting the official website -@iitb-isro-aicte-mapathon.fossee. Participants will be issued a joint certificate by IIT Bombay, ISRO, AICTE, and FOSSE.

Interested candidates should submit their entries between December 14 to 31, 2020. The result of the mapathon will be released between January 4 to 10, 2021. The online mapathon event aims to promote the use of ISRO data to create maps for use by common people. 

The Chairman of AICTE, Mr Anil Sahasrabudhe, the Director of IIT Bombay, Mr Subhasis Chaudhuri, and the Principal Investigator of FOSSE, Mr Kannan Moudgaly inaugurated the event on December 7, 2020.

The objective of this mapathon, as said by the AICTE, was to show the potential of ISRO data to the public. A statement issued by the AICTE said that this data could be used to keep track of natural calamities, floods, droughts, crop failure, soil fertility assessments, water and cropping area.

The Director of IIT Bombay, Mr Subhasis Chaudhuri,explained the use of ISRO maps. Chaudhuri stated, Even though the Indian government agencies are using ISRO maps as a key tool for resource analysis, most of these maps are not made by common citizens, thus lacking in their comprehensive usage”.

Extending the statement, he added that these maps would be used in wide and diverse fields. He believed that the maps were crucial to logistics, natural resource management, geography, forest management, and local administration. 

The mapathon is being held by these organizations in coordination with the Ministry of Education, India.
