ISRO Adopts 100 Atal Tinkering Labs to Encourage Space Education in Schools; Read Full Report Here

ISRO is set to acquire about 100 Atal Tinkering Labs across the country to promote space education among school students. The decision was jointly taken by ISRO (Indian Space Research Organisation), NITI Ayog and Atal Innovation Mission during a virtual meeting on Monday (January 11, 2021).

This collaboration will not only enhance the theoretical or practical knowledge of students. Additionally, it will encourage them to opt for B.Tech in Space Technology and understand space education concepts including Electronics, Physics, Optics, Space Technology, and Material Sciences.

The initiative has been made to ensure students embrace technology and innovation-driven education. ISRO will mentor students in advanced 21st-century cutting-edge technologies, related to space, an official statement reads.

Atal Innovation Mission and NITI Aayog collaboration have led to the establishment of more than 7000 ATLs across the country, allowing more than three million students between class 6 to class 10 to gain problem-solving skills and an innovative mindset.

ISRO scientists and engineers, along with the Capacity Building Programme Office at the space agency’s headquarters, will mentor children as well as teachers in ATLs for encouraging experiments, and brainstorming workshops.

ISRO Chairman Dr K Sivan invited students to witness a rocket launch from the spaceport at Sriharikota in Andhra Pradesh, Satish Dhawan Space Centre. Meanwhile, NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant welcomed the collaboration with ISRO to make improvements in space technology via Atal Innovation Mission and its initiatives.

“I am glad that to nurture our future space scientists, ISRO, in collaboration with their regional research centres, are adopting 100 Atal Tinkering Labs where ISRO scientists and research will personally guide and mentor the young innovators in the field of STEM education and Space Technology,” NITI Aayog CEO Amitabh Kant said.
