IMA Opposes AYUSH Training For Medical Students; Read Full Report Here

Indian Medical Association (IMA) has sent an official letter to National Medical Commission (NMC) in respect to showing its objection in regards to medical students taking Ayush training.

In the Indian Medical Association letter to NMC, the association states that it is not advisable to offer AYUSH Training to students who have already trained in modern medicines.

Since medical students have not learned the same in undergraduate programs, practicing a system of medicine is not feasible for them, the letter further adds.

The official letter of the Indian Medical Association reads, "It is not prudent for an Intern trained in modern medicine to partake and practice a system of medicine which he has not learned in under graduation with know-how and show-how paradigms".

As per IMA objections, the association further adds that offering Ayush training to medical students who are well trained in modern medicine can become dangerous knowledge, and affect public health.

Medical students who have not received any education in the field of Ayush-related treatment during their Undergraduate, or Postgraduate education. Additionally, IMA has also raised its concerns in regards to mentors at Ayush.

Indian Medical Association (IMA) has further questioned the National Medical Commission (NMC) whether the mentors will be assessed by NMC faculty norms.

Referring to the same, the letter reads, "Working there for a week the intern will not learn any new skill, and there is no clarity who shall be their mentor, and will they be assessed by NMC faculty norms or not”

Questioning the NCM proposed one-week elective training for medical students in an AYUSH medicine branch, the IMA asked: “Are we adding engineering and Agriculture science too for a week as it will make him a perfect human being?”

Indian Medical Association further added that one week-period exposure in the field of system of medicine, students will only be exposed to half the education they need in order to treat people in the right way, which is disastrous for the country.

“IMA fully opposes the inclusion of one-week exclusive elective posting which is contrary to the established norms, superfluous, and an attempt to initiate myopathy. IMA strives for purity of profession.”

It added: “In this pretext, attempts will be made to introduce all these disciplines inside the modern medical hospitals, and slowly myopathy will creep in”.
