IITs Plan to Allow Afghan Student To Return to Campus; JNU Students Send SOS to Administration: Read Full Report Here


Amid the increasing terror of the Taliban and Afghanistan government collapsing, Afghani students who are studying in India are now in fear of returning to their home country and are seeking help from various IITs. 

Owing to the condition in Afghanistan, IIT Afghani students from around the country have reached out to their concerned authorities of various IITs in India to request for them for extension of visas or allow them to come back to campus. 

IIT Bombay Allow Afghan Student To Return to Campus

Following the several requests received by the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay from Afghani students, the institute has now decided to step forward and help Afghan students to return to Mumbai campus so that they can continue their studies in India. 

Referring to the conditions in Afghanistan, the IIT Bombay, Director, Subhasis Chaudhuri said in his post on Facebook, "We offered admission to quite a few students from Afghanistan in the master's program this year under scholarships from ICCR. Because of online instructions, they were participating in the class from home".

"However, due to rapidly deteriorating conditions in their homeland, they wanted to come out of their country and join the hostels on the campus” he added.

IIT Bombay, Director, Subhasis Chaudhuri further added that now the institute has accepted the requests of students, and will do its best to save their dreams. We hope that they are all safe and can join us soon, he added.

IIT Delhi Reached Out to Help Afghan Students, JNU Received SOS

As from the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi, official Naveen Garg said, “IIT Delhi has made a provision for these students to return to the campus. But a lot depends on bureaucratic hurdles they may face now”

“For instance, a student wrote to us, saying he could not get his visa processed due to long queues at the embassy office,” he added.

Jawaharlal Nehru University, JNU has also received various requests from students asking for authorities to extend their visas and let them return to the campus. With the terror in Afghanistan, the students are now looking for an escape and trying various measures to continue their education. 

Hundreds of students are now in the care of India and reside under the aid of human resource development and capacity building in Afghanistan. In addition to this, India has also decided to release 1000 educational scholarships to Afghan nation students.

As of now, students from Afghan who were studying in JNU have applied for visa extensions even after the completion of their courses. Afghan students around the country are now concerned for their safety and hoping to stay in India for as long as possible.
