The directors from the Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) on Monday went to Kargil to explore the feasibility of setting up an engineering college in the Ladakh district.
The directors' team consists of three members from IIT-Delhi, Professor V Ramgopal Rao, Professor Subhasis Chaudhuri from IIT Bombay and IIT-Kanpur Prof Abhay Karandikar.
According to the spokesman, the IIT directors interacted with the district authorities and students to discover the fellowship opportunities for the students of the Union Territory in various IITs.
The IIT Delhi director, Rao addressed the meeting and said that Lieutenant Governor Ladakh R K Mathur, who visited IIT Delhi, discussed the possibility of establishing an engineering college in Kargil.
He said that the team visited Kargil to examine the ground reality about the feasibility for setting up an engineering college in the district and to assess the student's interest in the engineering field.
Professor M Balakrishnan, Department of CSE, IIT-Delhi addressed the challenges faced by students in remote places and stressed that students should go outside for studies to gain maximum exposure and more opportunities.

The director of IIT Bombay responded to the questions of the students and spoke about several branches of engineering and career prospects.
Further, Prof Karandikar from IIT Kanpur gave a brief overview about the incubation and innovation programme and internship with the IITs, annual fellowship programme in IITs, for the students of Ladakh.
The team of directors visited the Government Degree College, Kargil, and met the vice principal, who apprised the overall functioning and different courses being taught to the students at the college.
Prof Karandikar, IIT Kanpur said about 2,000 students are currently enrolled in the college while there are a total of 30 permanent and 23 contractual teaching assistants rendering their teaching services in the college.
The district authorities said that the team of directors had an interactive session with the students of the Government Polytechnic College, Kargil and notified them about various aspects of the fellowship component and solicited testimonials of the students interest in the fellowship program.

Earlier, Kargil’s Chief Education Officer apprised the team of the enrolment of school students in the district. He said that around 32,000 students are studying in various schools in the district at present, out of which 3,000 are pursuing their studies in the science stream. Overall there are 22 government and two private higher secondary schools functioning in the Ladakh district, he added.
The district authorities informed that the IITs are collaborating with the Department of Higher Education, Ladakh in order to review different aspects of technical education to increase employment and entrepreneurship opportunities for the youngsters of the Union Territory.
Furthermore, the authorities stated the main aim of the collaboration, which is to explore ways to promote innovation and entrepreneurship focused on the local ecosystem, skill development for enhancing job opportunities and quality of education for increasing higher education opportunities and also for establishing a quality engineering institution in the Ladakh district.
An 'Expression of Interest' will be finalized based on the outcome of the various meetings with the stakeholders. In the presence of the Lt Governor of Ladakh, the EoI is expected to be signed between the Consortium of IITs and the Department of Higher Education, Ladakh on September 22, 2021, and based on the signed EoI, the detailed plan with timelines will be further designed, the district authorities concluded.
