IIT Ropar, Signs MOU with ARTRAC Set Up Centre of Excellence

New Delhi: An agreement for the establishment of a centre of excellence (CoE) for studies and applied research in defence and security at the Indian Institute of Technology, Ropar and the Army Training Command (ARTRAC) of the Indian Army has been inked.

The CoE plans to utilise the technical resources of IIT Ropar and ARTRAC's operational resources in a variety of fields, including advanced materials and manufacturing, deep learning algorithm design and development, multipath and wireless networks, data transmission tools, remote sensing and forecasting, cyber security, and others.

"Center of excellence for studies and applied research in defence and security" will be the CoE's designation. The centre will concentrate on research and technological areas like wireless communication, information warfare or security, such as quadcopters and drones, medium and light weaponry, missile technologies, body armour, force survivability, hypersonic applications, and energy directed weapons, among other technologies and fields in the larger domain of defence and security.

The ARTRAC will provide funding for officers to participate in both on- and off-campus educational programmes. In order to better understand the educational, research, and technological needs of the Army, IIT Ropar faculty and students will visit Army establishments in order to conduct collaborative research and innovation in the fields of management and the social sciences. Army officers will also visit IIT Ropar in order to conduct research and innovation.

Rajeev Ahuja, director of IIT Ropar, and SS Mahal, general officer commanding-in-chief of ARTRAC, signed the agreement. As part of its on-campus and off-campus programmes on research and innovation, the institute will also hold training sessions to exchange information about educational programmes for security practitioners in the armed forces, the central armed police forces (CAPF), intelligence agencies, and state police forces that are run by it.

Ahuja made the following statement as he signed the contract: "IIT, Ropar has the best infrastructure and a young, dynamic faculty, and we are ready to establish this centre in cooperation with the Army and will establish CoE at IIT Ropar campus. This platform will provide a platform to foster and promote several forms of initiatives, including collaborative research, formal education of Army officers, short-term training, and short visits (exchange programmes) by personnel from IIT Ropar and Army.
