IITs, NITs, and other technical institutes across India have received a green signal from the Union Ministry of Education to adopt nearby National Highway stretches as laboratories to study and get familiar with the latest industry trends.
According to the Union Ministry of Education, students, faculty, and researchers of Indian Institute of Technology (IITs) and other prestigious institutes will study the improvement prospects on the adopted National Highway stretches.
Moreover, the National Highway Authority of India will provide two-month internship opportunities to 20 students each from undergraduate and postgraduate programs. PG and UG students will receive INR 15,000 and INR 8,000 as stipends.
According to an official at Ministry of Education, NHAI had inked an MoU with IITs, NITs, and AICTE approved Premier Tech Colleges to adopt National Highway stretches on a voluntary basis.
National Highway Authority of India’s partnered institutes will provide necessary suggestions to the authority on the adopted stretches such as maintenance, safety, and comfort in riding, new technology usage, and removal of congestion points.
Additionally, these premier tech institutes are bound to suggest relevant innovation and parameters to NHAI related to National Highway stretches. This initiative will also give an opportunity to the scholars associated with news projects.
The suggestions that all IITs, NITs, and other institutes will provide to NHAI will be based on their experience specific to the site topography climate, and resource potential to provide a better socio-economic outcome.
NHAI will support the construction of lab infrastructure in the institute. The authority may also sponsor a relevant research project that helps in improving road quality by using alternative resource material.
“This initiative will also instill a sense of contribution in building local infrastructure among the students’ fraternity,” said the MoE official.
About 18 IITs, 26 NITs and 190 engineering colleges have volunteered for the National Highway stretches scheme. Till now, 200 institutes have signed MoU for the implementation of the scheme. However, the Union Ministry of Education is expecting civil engineering UG and PG program offering institutes to adopt the National Highway stretches across the country.
