IIT Madras Name Change to IIT Chennai Not Under Consideration: Education Minister; Read Full Report Here


IIT Madras: Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan has recently announced during the monsoon session of Lok Sabha that no proposal is under consideration regarding the name change of IIT Madras to IIT Chennai. 

Referring to the queries related to the name change of IIT Madras, the Education Minister added in this response to Lok Sabha that any form of proposal regarding the change in name of the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras is not under consideration of the government.

The Education Minister was asked several questions regarding whether the government of India has received any proposal regarding the name of the institute by any organization or individual and what actions have been taken regarding the same. 

Tamil Nadu Government renamed the city of Madras to Chennai in 1996, due to which there were several doubts regarding whether the institute name should be changed accordingly or not. 

The Indian Institute of Technology, IIT Madras was established in the year 1959 by the Union Minister for Scientific and Cultural Affairs. IIT Madras undergraduate and postgraduate courses are offered to students under its sixteen academic departments.

With its excellent education facility, and performance, the IIT Madras has achieved its rankings among the top IITs in India and is also ranked as the 'Best Educational Institution' by the Ministry of Human Resource Development.

On July 26, 2021, the Lok Sabha Monsoon session was held during which Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan stated that the government has received a proposal regarding research promotion. 

He further added that under this proposal, the Government of India will propose a national research foundation in accordance with National Education Policy. 

The National Research Foundation will be established within a period of five years with a budget of more than INR 50,000 crore. The main aim of the same will be to offer an effective research ecosystem in the country.
