IIT Madras Launches Diploma Programme in Virtual Reality in Collaboration With Japanese Research Firm; Details Here


The Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Madras and a Japanese Research Firm, Monolith Research and Training Labs have decided to collaborate and launch an Advanced Diploma Program in Virtual Reality. 

IIT Madras has announced that the Diploma Programme in Virtual Reality will be offered through online and offline mode. Students from engineering background or those who have enrolled in any engineering degree can apply for the diploma programme. 

The institute has announced that IIT Madras Admission 2021 for the diploma programme will begin from November 2021 and the first batch will commence from January 2022. IIT Madras will intake a total of 50 students.

Virtual reality (VR) is a strong technology wherein the human senses are artificially stimulated. The VR allows a user to interact with a computer-simulated environment to experience, feel and touch the pictures of past, present, and the future using the computer programs.

IIT Madras and Monolith Research and Training Labs, an associate company of Monolith, Asia signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) under this collaboration. 

This IIT Madras Course in Virtual Reality will be coordinated by the IIT Madras by the Centre of Excellence on Virtual Reality and Haptics, established under the government's initiative, ‘Institute of Eminence’. 

Prof. M. Manivannan, Department of Applied Mechanics, IIT Madras, pointed out the unique aspects of the diploma program. He said that Virtual Reality is inherently a practical and an interdisciplinary course. It is quite challenging to offer such an experiential and interdisciplinary course online. 

Further, the institute and Monolith Research Firm have accepted the challenge of offering the diploma programme in Virtual Reality for the first time in India, he said. 

Candidates who pursue the diploma programme will be offered potential employment opportunities in various sectors including animation industries, architecture, IT Companies, and engineering industries to healthcare and media production.

Fresher candidates with a minimum of bachelor's degree or working professionals who are willing to upskill in immersive technologies are eligible to apply for the advanced diploma programme in Virtual Reality at IIT Madras.
